Job Summary:

The Video Engineer is responsible for supporting the Department of Film-Television-Digital Media by selecting, installing and maintaining all broadcast equipment and information technology systems for FTDM labs, FTDM/Sports Broadcasting ESPN Plus television productions, FTDM/Sports Broadcasting videoboard operations, and other department needs. This includes the FTDM control room and television studios, FTDM media labs, and remote fiber locations at athletic venues.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provides department support by installing, maintaining, and repairing broadcast and video equipment in all FTDM areas. Assists with FTDM labs and serves as a resource for identifying and solving technology-related equipment problems. Helps with set-up and operation of sports broadcasting labs (i.e., ESPN Plus productions).

  2. Provides assistance to individual users by assisting in the training of faculty, staff and students in the use of technologies; providing information about equipment operation and answering questions; explaining equipment features to users; troubleshooting user problems.

  3. Maintains quality operations by installing and modifying new and existing equipment and facilities; coordinating with vendors, technicians and other campus personnel to install new cable wiring and distribution of video and network links in the Moudy building or other campus buildings before and during the sports productions.

  4. Maintains records by designing and documenting video and audio systems related to installations in the Moudy building and other special installation related to FTDM production and training needs; preparing appropriate reports and documentation; maintaining records of repair, placement and maintenance of equipment. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by researching new equipment and trends in television; communicating with vendors and other engineers; making recommendations for improvements.

  5. Maintains and troubleshoots the following items: broadcast cameras and lenses; multi-viewer systems and their interfaces to tally and UMD data, monitor walls, and video processing systems; control room infrastructure systems including intercom, KVM system, monitoring, patch panels, routers, and other live production-related gear.

  6. Performs maintenance and updates of subsystems including software and hardware updates/modifications and replacements as needed.

  7. Provides technical oversight for FTDM/Sports Broadcasting ESPN Plus and screen show productions.

  8. Assists in teaching students how to use broadcast equipment and provides input into their evaluation as needed.

  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years as a television or video engineer, preferably with experience in both.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

  • Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of design and utilization of studio systems and equipment for efficient use of FTDM facilities.
  • Knowledge of presentation techniques; knowledge of electrical codes and FCC rules and regulations pertaining to public safety.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic delivery systems for SDI and HD signal distribution between athletic venues and control room located in Moudy south.
  • Knowledge of optical fiber signal distribution and system maintenance.
  • Knowledge of SMPTE standards for broadcast television and video production environments and a working knowledge of a variety of testing equipment including waveform monitor and multi-meters.
  • Knowledge of studio operations and infrastructure systems including video walls, multi-viewer systems, video processing systems, broadcast cameras and lenses.
  • Skill with Sony, Canon, Grass Valley, EVS, Ross, Dante and Evertz systems and equipment.
  • Skill with various cable installation and pulling methods, best practices, and terminations.
  • Skill with computer systems and Microsoft applications.
  • Skill to calibrate and repair to a component level all studio and video equipment used in the broadcast environment.
  • Skill in using tools and testing equipment; skill in proper termination of video and audio cables.
  • Ability to train staff, faculty and students in the use of video production equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain equipment used to broadcast live and tape-delayed programs for FTDM.
  • Ability to stay knowledgeable of current/future technology.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • Supports all FTDM labs in person (i.e., TCU Athletic sporting events), some of which occur at night and/or on weekends. Assists with setting up equipment for sports broadcasting events and checking out equipment/connectivity prior to such events.
  • This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
