Demonstrated subject knowledge of Texas Music
Research and analytical skills
Database management, including FilemakerPro and/or Access; library/archival management systems such as ArchivesSpace, Archon, or Caiasoft
Organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines
Ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, colleagues, and students
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in an archive, library, museum, or other cultural heritage site
Experience with descriptive metadata standards and controlled vocabularies
Job Description
The Metadata Specialist (Project) is responsible for creating original descriptive metadata in support of The Wittliff’s digitization efforts, with a focus on holdings within the Texas Music Collection. This position ensures that collection material is physically prepped; described according to Wittliff metadata application profiles and professional standards; and that internal and external access points are updated. The Metadata Specialist reports to the Metadata Archivist and collaborates closely with curators, archivists, and University Libraries staff on digital and other initiatives. This is a 2-year Project position.
Job Duties
Project Management:
Work closely with Wittliff curators and archivists to identify, assess, and select collection material for description and/or digitization
Develop project plans, schedules, and workflows for assigned projects
Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation related to project activities and deliverables, and report out as requested to stakeholders
Collection Management:
Physically prepare collection material for digitization, including arranging, labeling, and performing routine preservation activities as necessary
Coordinate with University Libraries’ digital lab on delivery and handling of collection material for digitization
Update legacy finding aids, databases, and platforms, as necessary to ensure up-to-date access points
Digital Access:
Create original descriptive metadata for a variety of digital resources for inclusion in The Wittliff’s online digital collections and for digital preservation
Use a variety of controlled vocabularies such as Library of Congress Name Authority and Subject Headings, and the Art & Architecture Thesaurus, as well as contribute to The Wittliff’s local controlled vocabulary database
Collaborate with Wittliff archivists in developing, refining, and documenting metadata standards for online platforms such as ArchivesSpace and Islandora; ensure accuracy of descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata
Conduct research in order to accurately identify persons, places, and subjects represented in the holdings
Contribute as needed in rights assessment and clearance for assigned projects
Reference and Access:
Contribute to The Wittliff’s reference service by providing assistant to students and other researchers using the collections
Special Projects:
Complete special projects according to criteria and established deadlines
Participate in relevant committees
Collaborate with other Wittliff and University Libraries staff on special projects and initiatives
