More than just a place of protection, it is also a source of hope and support, helping to prevent people from becoming or remaining homeless. 


Located in Ames, Iowa, The Bridge Home has been helping people since 1985 and serves the Two Rivers Region, five counties in central Iowa — Story, Marshall, Boone, Greene and Hardin. JOB SUMMARY 


The Shelter and Housing Coordinator (SHC) is responsible for direct shelter guest support with people who are experiencing homelessness in an emergency shelter during the evening and overnight hours; as well as maintaining and regulating the shelter to ensure a safe healthy environment. The full-time position averages 40 hours per week, 3rd shift, 11pm-7am. This position performs administrative tasks involved in the assessment, intake, review, maintenance, exit and follow-up of a caseload of program participants. Work involves orienting all eligible participants to the shelter program and providing supportive services to promote participants’ self-sufficiency, integration into the community, and permanency in housing. The position meets as scheduled with shelter staff and assigned clients to assure clients’ needs are being met and to staff any concerns. The principle duties are performed in a general office environment, focusing on the City of Ames and Story County. This position takes an active role in Two Rivers by participating in weekly pull meetings and Community Housing Partners subcommittee. Participates in Point -in-Time July and January counts for Two Rivers and/or Story County.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES

_ SHELTER _

• Provide oversight and security so that a safe and healthy environment is maintained at all shelter sites at all times. Develop and maintain rapport with shelter guests through open communication and using a strength-based approach. Intervene and appropriately de- escalate crisis-situations.

• Complete all required paperwork in a timely, legible, objective, and accurate manner.

• Provide information and referral assistance to shelter guests regarding available housing options, support from appropriate social service agencies and/or community programs.

• Assess housing barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness to determine housing and service needs.

• Conduct, at minimum, a weekly meeting with each client assigned to your caseload to establish goals to housing, ensure progress, and provide guidance in overcoming roadblocks.

• Meet clients where they are to help them maintain their dignity and find hope for a self-sustainable future.


_ HOUSING_

• Coordinate the selection of appropriate safe housing for participants and submit recommendations for housing placement for approval by the program/housing supervisor.

• Complete Fair Market Rent (FMR), habitability, lead-based paint, and flood plain inspections on potential rental units along with rent comparison checklists.

• Turn in the completed client file to the program/housing supervisor for final approval prior to requesting payment.

• Conduct assessments of client strengths and barriers to stability and assist participants in reducing barriers. Update client-centered goals as necessary.


DATA ENTRY AND REPORTING

• Maintain current and accurate data in the appropriate data management system in use by the agency.

• Complete objectively and professionally written file documentation on time as per best practice and funder requirements.

• Observe confidentiality and ethical guidelines as per best practice and legal requirements.

• Review annual goals and objectives of shelter and housing program.

• Professional development to increase skill sets.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of high school diploma, associate degree or some post high school education preferred. Prefer a minimum of one year of experience working with persons experiencing homelessness, in poverty, or with disabilities.

• Must demonstrate concepts of how to organize, prioritize and plan work to meet deadlines, data collection principles and utilize confidentiality requirements. Must be detail oriented, reliable, thorough, and exhibit follow through.

• Ability to work under pressure, make appropriate and effective decisions, and multi-task.

• Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Must demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office Software and basic computer skills.

• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Basic conversational ability in a second language a plus.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16 per hour with a 10% shift differential for hours worked between 11pm-7am
