A Firearms Technician job is available with the City of Fort Worth Police Department – Investigative & Support Command. This position performs a variety of examinations & analysis on firearms, cartridge cases and other firearms related evidence for the Fort Worth Police Department. Utilizes the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) to enter cartridge casings into the system.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED and no previous experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Firearms knowledge that includes: (Safety, Functionality, NIBIN)
- Chain of custody experience (Principles and procedures of record keeping)
- Microsoft Office (Excel) experience.
- Court testimony experience.
The Firearms Technician job responsibilities include:
- Test-fire all types of firearms (including larger caliber) in types of conditions
- Work with biological hazards
- Use an operate the NIBIN database system
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Examines firearms for the presence of trace evidence and determines the need to recover and preserve evidence when present; evaluates and documents the condition of the seals and packaging of all evidence to be examined.
- Test-fires firearms, collects and preserves fired ammunition components for comparative analysis; temporarily restores non-functioning firearms using parts from the firearms collection to obtain standards
- Documents examination findings according to established standard operating procedures and prepares comprehensive reports describing examination results
- Provides professional courtroom testimony regarding evidence examination and findings
- Maintains Firearms Reference Collection, equipment and supplies.
- Provides training to law enforcement and justice personnel as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations
Working Conditions
Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises; and may be exposed to biohazards.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Final candidates selected for hire in the Police Department will be subject to a criminal background, drug screen, polygraph examination and fingerprint check. Applicants must not have used marijuana during the previous twenty-four (24) months, nor illegally used any controlled substances within the last five (5) years. The candidate must provide a DNA buccal sample after date of hire. Must have ability to apply for a Forensic Technician licensure by the Texas Forensic Science Commission within 1 year of hire. Must comply with mandatory requirements for annual hearing and blood screening for lead direction.
