The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for an Executive Director, Software Development and Analytics for our Technology department . This position is based in our Reston, Virginia office.

As the Executive Director, you will lead several teams that support the College Board programs and business units. The currently supported programs and business units are College Readiness Assessments, Advanced Placement, College and Career Access, LEvR, Technology & Data Science, and Marketing.

You will be accountable for the successful delivery of the Information Technology component of large, complex product initiatives. You will bring a range and depth of agile development, technical, business domain, leadership, and people management skills, to successfully lead all aspects of large scale, technology-oriented, and software development. You have strong working experience with all levels of executive leadership.

What you’ll do

  • Manage teams and oversee all activities ensuring alignment with departmental and business-wide vision, strategies, and goals
  • Recruit and retain highly talented team members ensuring clear role definition, active involvement in recruitment, and growth and development of team members to successfully deliver on priorities and goals
  • Perform other duties and assignments as delegated by the VP of Software Engineering, or the College Board
  • Drive the Data and Analytics eco system architectures to meet changing business needs in a privacy-aware world
  • Design solutions for understanding and implementing effective data policy execution to understand the types of data, how its stored, protected and accessed
  • Guide discussions on data privacy, data separation, data access on principles of least access
  • Take the AWS Data Lakes based solutions to the next level and develop AWS Cloud Native architectures that meet business needs across multiple products
  • Inform product direction and translate product vision into an engineering roadmap to fulfill College Board’s expanding needs for new data infrastructure and solutions
  • Build full stack reporting and analytical products utilizing the AWS data paradigm
  • Build, lead, and provides oversight for multiple teams responsible for developing and implementing solutions and systems
  • Leverage a range of agile development, technical, business domain, leadership and people management, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in the execution of your duties and responsibilities
  • Integrate critical business information from the program and product owners and business units into technology solutions
  • Collaborate with program and product owners, business unit, technology and operational stakeholders and raise blockers/impediments to leadership, as appropriate
  • Demonstrate strong ability to collaborate with others to solve problems with agreed upon solutions that best meet both short and long-term needs and business objectives
  • Manage a poly-skilled technical staff (architects, scrum masters, developers, etc.) and collaborate with key program and product owners to set priorities and goals
  • Manage budget, schedule, quality, cost, and resources for systems and solutions
  • Develop and drive incremental quality and agility into the organization as it relates to assigned delivery portfolio, make recommendations on implementation plans, identify and manage delivery blockers
  • Grow College Board institutional knowledge and education domain knowledge over time to drive a business-oriented perspective for your technology teams

About you

  • You are a discrete leader, high-energy, agile-minded, strategic, proactive, a critical thinker, a direct and balanced communicator, highly organized and committed to the College Board’s vision and competencies
  • BS degree in Business, Computer Science, or related field/equivalent experience
  • Direct experience growing DevOps teams and in Agile delivery
  • Minimum of 10 years work experience required
  • Mission-driven; passionate about the College Board and related constituencies
  • Good sense of self and strong personal presence
  • Management / mentorship of staff experience required
  • Creatively solve problems for which the answers aren’t always obvious
  • Experience hiring and developing engineers under your guidance
  • Experience gathering feedback from customers to inform engineering prioritization
  • Knowledge of AWS services, open source technologies, and industry best practices regarding full stack applications grounded in data
  • Awareness of consumer privacy regulations and their impact on technology design
  • Facilitation and negotiation, has worked strategically and collaboratively across departments/ business units
  • Effective team player with strong emotional intelligence – self-awareness, confidence, ability to manage conflict, and empathy
  • Ability to effectively respond to questions and issues – i.e., effective in communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences at all levels in the organization
  • Ability to understand and assess new technologies, and their potential applicability to business needs in an efficient, effective manner
  • Demonstrated competency in strategic thinking and leadership with strong abilities in relationship management
  • Ability to manage stakeholders’ expectations and facilitate status and working sessions with disparate groups of College Board personnel
