What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Translator - Spanish position at The County of Santa Clara?
Under direction of the Medical Translator Coordinator to provide interpretation/translation services for patients and clients of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
This is a Spanish skilled Medical Translator position located in the Valley Medical Center (VMC) Language Services department. Candidates must take and pass the required language certification exam for the specified language prior to appointment.
In person exam will be tentatively scheduled for the week of August 14, 2023.

- Functions as liaison between health Care team/physician and patient;

Provides language interpretation during the patient's course of medical assessment and non-medical services to patients and/or clients and their families;

Assists patients in interpreting and clarifying hospital procedures and forms;

As directed, advises patients, clients and/or families about available health care and hospital services;
-
Interfaces with Nursing, Outpatient Department, Social Services, and other hospital departments;
-
Guides and processes patients and clients through clinics, hospital and other related facilities,
-
Explains and interprets patient's rights and responsibilities;
-
Performs routine tasks related to maintaining translation records;
-
May assist in preparation of brochures, audio visual materials and written materials for non-English speaking groups;
-
May assist in certification of bilingual employees;
-
May assist in training lower level translators; and
- Performs other related duties, as required.
Sufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and abilities.
Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities required would normally be acquired by one year experience in an acute hospital or clinic setting and demonstrated skills in interpretation and translation of a second language (medical and non-medical terminology).
Knowledge of:

Interpretation/translation of at least one language, other than English, including intracultural literary levels, principal idioms and slang;

Basic hospital organization;

General medical terminology in English and a second language;

Legal ramifications of medical interpretation/translation;

Laws and regulations regarding patient care;

Modern hospital methods, forms and equipment;
- Ethnic customs, culture and religious attitudes particular to non-English speaking ethnic groups.

Speak, read and write a second language fluently;

Interact with a wide range of multi-cultural and non-English speaking patients;

Translate detailed medical/legal information of written materials and documents for patient's signature;

Communicate effectively with patients, their families and hospital staff;

Function as liaison between the health care team/physician and patient;

Assist in the preparation of brochures, memos, other literature, and audio-visual materials relating to hospital policies and procedures;

Work under emergency or stress situations;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all levels of medical, professional, administrative and support personnel.
Salary : $66,926 - $80,856
