PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The Director of Advancement is responsible for all of The Covering House’s fundraising efforts and manages and develop relationships with financial partners to sustain the mission. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
The Director of Advancement is responsible for raising enough money to meet the organization’s financial goals, forecasting future income and developing a long-term donor base. The Director of Advancement is responsible for marketing to attract attention from potential supporters and host industry events that raise awareness of the organization’s goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Corporate Giving & Grants
- Collaborate with the Executive Director in the creation of a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors.
- Design and drive strategies for annual giving program, including online giving and direct mail.
- Direct and execute a strong, consistent, relational major gifts program and organize a planned giving program.
- Solicit, prepare and mail appeals for donations. Coordinate other types of donor stewardship efforts, i.e. first donation post cards and donor thank you calls.
- Oversee Lhamon Quilt square Society annual giving program for donors at the $1,000 level.
- Secure financial support from individuals, corporations and faith-based organization.
- Secure support through creative, innovative events and giving opportunities.
- Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors through letters, appeals, and stewardship calls.
- Develop a comprehensive corporate giving strategy to engage corporations in the Covering House mission.
- Generate new ideas that increase revenue and investor longevity.
- Support the grants process with reports and at times with assistance with application submission.
- Attend internal and external events and network with potential donor audiences
- Collaborate with the advancement team and program staff to refine grant-seeking strategies, cultivate funders and review grant applications and reports.
Leadership and Management
- Manage the Advancement department staff in designing and fulfilling their goals.
- Lead a partnership with the Executive Director, Leadership Team, Board of Directors and development staff to design and fulfill The Covering House annual fundraising strategy and goals.
- Oversee and direct the implementation of the annual development plan.
- Design strategies and tactics for growth and success across all areas of fundraising.
- Collaborate with program and staff, in coordination with grant writer, to refine grant-seeking strategies, cultivate funders, review grant applications and finalize reports.
- Collaborate internally to develop budgets, monitor and forecast revenue and expenses, and drive financial results.
- Work with the Data and IT Administrator in developing a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of fundraising outcomes, resulting in informed, data-driven, and investor-centric strategies.
- Work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director and the to build and empower the Board’s capacity, capability, consistency, and confidence in fundraising.
- Manage staff and contractors in event logistics and administration, ensuring impeccable event results.
- Manage the administration of the state tax credit program tracking funding through the state of Missouri, including tax credit application submission, and follow up with donors.
- Manage donor communications for high-level, strategic fundraising opportunities.
- Empower advancement team in executing the advancement communications plan through innovative and creative approaches, consistent and aligned with organization’s communications strategy.
- Provide agency/program presentations to faith-based groups, community organizations and businesses.
Administrative
- Coordinate administrative details for development events/meetings, including mailing/sending invitations, maintaining guest lists and RSVPs, managing on-site registration, and other event-related duties as needed.
- Support the Executive Director with administrative duties, such as data entry and preparation of materials for board and donor meetings.
- Communicate fundraising goals throughout the organization and empower team members to participate in accomplishing The Covering House annual goals
- Coordinate and schedule meetings and appointments as needed for current and potential donors.
- Monitor fundraising results and consistently report progress to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors; participate in the Board Meetings and Committees, as requested.
- Work closely with HR to build and maintain a volunteer base and utilizing as needed to assist with various projects in the agency.
Data Management
- Data entry of gifts and overall database administration using donor data base.
- Prepare reports, establish tracking metrics where gaps exist for financial partners.
- Creating and updating fundraising status reports and doing research.
- Manage matching gift confirmations across multiple online platforms and tracking their disbursements.
- Work closely with Finance as it relates to gift processing, credit card processing, reporting, etc.
- Working with Data and IT Administrator to develop reports and mailing lists.
- Develop and track proposals, outcomes, and reporting requirements for all grants.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be familiar with trauma informed care.
- Be familiar with and follow mandated abuse and neglect reporting procedures.
- Assist at residential home as needed.
- Regular and punctual attendance to shifts and meetings.
- Maintain 40 hours of training yearly.
- Serve on committees, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, business administration.
- 5 years’ experience in fund development required.
- Familiarity with sales and marketing strategies, grant writing and event planning.
- Experience managing fundraising employees.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and have no substantiated report of abuse or neglect.
