Department: Office of the Treasurer
SUMMARY
As part of the Treasurer’s Office management team, you will oversee the activities of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), which serves departments across the entire organization. Key functions include developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective reporting, planning, and analysis capability that will provide all levels of management with appropriate analytical tools to establish goals and measure performance. You will also oversee the development of the annual budget process for the organization.
You will participate in department planning and decision making, generate ideas for process improvement, help with the implementation of new programs, and be willing to take on complex and/or ad hoc projects as needed. You will demonstrate effective management skills, including the ability to train, mentor, and develop staff, and lead by example following the Church’s ethical and professional standards in working both with personnel in the Treasurer’s Office and across the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Hire and manage a staff of analysts at differing levels of experience and training. Provide challenging work, clear expectations and regular feedback as well as facilitate appropriate support and training. Develop and enhance a financial management training program for the Church to nurture analytical talent among members and provide a feeder pool of analysts for the organization.
- Actively participate on cross-functional management teams (e.g., The Christian Science Monitor and Journal, Sentinel, and Herald) providing financial and strategy guidance as needed.
- Develop, maintain and monitor long-term financial plans and models for organization-wide initiatives and for individual business units, such as the long term real estate model and the Church’s cash-flow forecast model.
- Lead the strategic and operational aspects of the annual operating plan and budget process for the organization as well as provide support to the strategic business planning process.
- Provide standard and ad hoc reporting to the organization to communicate business unit and company consolidated historical, current, and forecasted financial and operational performance trends, using appropriate metrics. Present trends, key actions, and strategic implications to management.
- Partner with Controller and GL Manager in developing accounting approaches for overhead allocations and other accounting matters which impact management reporting. Participate in the monthly and annual accounting close process to enhance accuracy of the accounting through analytical review and trend analysis.
- Partner with Procurement Manager to ensure analytical support for major purchasing decisions, providing analysis as needed for multi-year agreements and overall Church spending trends.
- Participate on organization wide sponsor teams as requested to provide financial and operational knowledge and analysis as needed to accomplish the teams’ goals.
- Provides strategic and analytical support to the Manager and Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society.

This position has regular contact with business line managers, Treasurer’s Office staff, Coordinating Managers, the Trustees of the Christian Science Publishing Society, members of the Board of Directors, and vendors.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience
- 10 years of finance and accounting experience with progressive responsibility. CPA or MBA preferred.
- Ability to manage and engage with multiple projects concurrently, communicate on complex topics with internal and external constituents, and apply critical thinking skills to a variety of complex matters.
Knowledge/Skills
- Experience managing and training a team of professional-level employees; balancing diverse priorities and continually providing the highest level of client service to the Treasurer’s Office and Church management.
- Professional communication and writing skills required.
- Experience working in a cross-functional management structure with Agile project management preferred.
Technology Skills
Google Suite (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Drive), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) skills are required. ERP experience, a plus.
Work Environment
This position regularly works in an office environment at The Mother Church in Boston, MA.
Engagement with Christian Science
Membership in The Mother Church preferred; Primary Class instruction preferred.
