The Foundry Companies is a growing real estate investment and development company located in Bethesda, MD focused on creating value across the spectrum of property types for our investors and partners. We are experiencing growth in our Manufactured Housing Communities platform, owning and operating 1200 residential units across our portfolio in the Southeast and are currently searching for an experienced Controller to help take us to the next level.
This position reports directly to the owner of the company.
About the Candidate
Ideal candidate will be someone willing and able to help implement and build the internal accounting department, procedures and processes for a small, growing, and entrepreneurial real estate investment and development company. We are moving to a new integrated accounting and property management software (Appfolio). The candidate would ideally have experience with Appfolio, but it is not required. A willingness to learn and become an expert in the new software is required. The candidate should always be looking for process improvement opportunities, have excellent communication skills, and a strong interest in building something new which will require the handling of accounting, lease administration, and accounts payable responsibilities. We are a small company who will undoubtedly continue to grow and evolve. A team player who is willing to grow and evolve with us is necessary.
JOB DUTIES:
- Work with management to on-board existing property portfolio into a new accounting/property management software (Appfolio)
- Develop and implement accounting procedures
- Prepare monthly property and portfolio financial statements
- Prepare year-end property and portfolio financial packages
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations
- Ensure adherence to policies and procedures and maintain effective internal controls
- Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions, including accounts payable, billing, collections, and payroll
- Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
- Bi - Weekly accounts payable processing
- Code invoices in Appfolio per general ledger chart of accounts and ensure proper backup necessary for approval
- Work with Asset Management on invoice approval and payment processing
- Process resident move in/move outs in Appfolio
- Assist Asset Managers in property specific analysis
- Generate lease renewals, track/follow up with tenant Lease Expirations
- Review all executed lease agreements and ensure that critical financial and operational terms are abstracted into Appfolio in an accurate and timely manner
- Review tenant account ledgers for payments, late fees, charges, and credits
- Review, process, track and update in Appfolio all rent collections/charges/deposits/late fees etc.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
- BS degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA or CPA candidate strongly preferred.
- 4 years of recent property accounting experience
- Firm understanding of GAAP, procedures and internal controls
- Real Estate and Private Equity Real Estate Accounting
- APPFOLIO experience is a plus!
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
