Friendly Towns
The Friendly Towns Program is a signature area for The Fund from the organization’s historical roots. Today, Fresh Air youth are recruited from communities across New York City and welcomed into the homes of volunteer host families across the East Coast for a one-week visit. The Friendly Towns Program is supported by a network of volunteers who serve as key ambassadors and program partners in suburban and rural communities, as well as a team of professionals in the NYC’s FAF office and works collaboratively with the various portfolios in the organization. For Summer 2024, the program will run from June 27, 2024, through August 28, 2024. New and returning participants from ages 8-14 and returning participants (to the same host families) from ages 10-18 are eligible.

The Fresh Air Fund is currently recruiting Friendly Towns Program Assistants to work within our Friendly Towns department beginning on May 20th through mid-August!


Position Summary

The Fresh Air Fund is seeking organized, creative, and supportive individuals with excellent communication skills to serve as seasonal Friendly Towns Program Assistants. The Friendly Towns Program Assistants complete various tasks and support the overall efforts to coordinate the summer season. As a Friendly Towns Program Assistant, you will use your communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills to contribute to making summer a success for hundreds of NYC children.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative assistance to entire Friendly Towns team;
  • Support the team in contacting and following up with families, children, and volunteers via phone, email and in-person;
  • Assist with application review and reference checks;
  • Support with bus departures and returns;
  • Occasionally chaperone children on Fresh Air buses or public transportation;
  • Manage data entry in Salesforce CRM (training provided);
  • Create positive working relationships with all members of the NY office and Volunteers; and
  • Support the Friendly Towns Team in other tasks as needed


Required Skills:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old;
  • At least one year of college or significant work experience;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Comfortable with technological functions (Microsoft suites, printing, etc.);
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of serving children in New York City’s underserved communities;
  • Collaborative work ethic;
  • Available for the entire duration of the summer program; and
  • Mandarin and Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply


This role will be a hybrid position and your time will be split between the FAF NYC Office, Riverbank Park on Mondays (as needed), and occasional remote work.

Employment Period:
May 20, 2024 through mid-August (final date flexible)

Hours per Week: 35 hours/week

Compensation: $16/hour
