What are the responsibilities and job description for the Auto damage appraiser position at The General?
You will support the Claims Organization's goal of delivering quality service, internally and externally, leaving people with a positive seamless claims experience.
We are seeking an experienced appraiser who can work on moderately complex physical damage claims that require on-site inspections or face-to-face contact.
You will also handle some situational claim adjuster duties. You will conduct training and reinspection of new independent appraisers and network repair facilities.

You will work in the field and handle moderately complex auto physical damage claims typically within 1-2 hours of the greater Pittsburg, PA metro area.
You must be located within the region. A company fleet vehicle is provided with the position.
You will report to a Manager of Adjusting Services
Position Compensation Range :
$55,000.00 - $90,000.00

Primary Accountabilities
- Prepare and submit appraisals utilizing estimating software indicating costs for parts, materials and labor necessary to restore vehicles to pre-damaged condition
- Provide claims personnel with advice on vehicle repair, parts costs, garage knowledge, total loss determination, and when specific damage may be related to a accident
- Provide a clear explanation of estimates to the customer, answer customer questions and processes claim payments
- Identify industry approved equipment needed to complete repairs
- Investigate cause and origin of claims by contacting the appropriate parties
- Negotiate physical damage settlements and upon approval, explain settlements including total losses and correct repair methods in a manner that they can be understood by the customer
- Negotiate repair prices and techniques with repair facilities and customers, which may include the use of aftermarket parts, salvage parts, repair versus replacement, and betterment
- Utilize electronic claim system to document actions throughout the life of the claim
- Manage individual claim inventory to ensure productivity goals are achieved
- Recognize and have a broad understanding of state-specific differences in policies, contract coverages and claim history coverages;
Identify state-specific legislation and legal precedent based on prior legal cases for assigned geographical area
Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements
- 3 years of experience with an Electronic Estimating System (i.e. CCC, ADP, Mitchell) required
- 1 years of experience with Microsoft Office required (Word, Windows, and Excel)
- Basic understanding of and the ability to interpret automobile policies, including applicable endorsements
- Basic understanding of underwriting guidelines
- Recognize controls and resolve disputes utilizing arbitration, appraisal and alternate dispute resolutions
- You must be able to perform basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), including the calculation of averages and percentages.
Licenses
- Valid driver's license required plus an acceptable driving record.
- Obtain state specific property casualty claims licensing we will provide training.
Travel Requirements
- Up to 10%.
- Catastrophe duty as applicable.
Physical Requirements
- Visit areas that have a higher hazard than a typical office (customer homes, tow yards, shops).
- Adjust or move objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
Working Conditions
- Low / high temperatures, outdoor elements (precipitation and wind).
- Noisy environments, poor ventilation, small and enclosed spaces.
You will be in a full time hybrid and must be located in the greater Pittsburgh, PA metro area. On occasion you may be asked to travel to shops, tow yards, homes, etc.
and an office location for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture events.
