Summary

This position provides program services emphasizing past and present Native Alaskan cultural lifestyles, in collaboration with community tribal leaders and organizations.  The curriculum covers topics ranging from Cultural Relevant Educational Programs, Cultural Awareness Activities, Urban Skills and Orientation, Individual Counseling and Evaluation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides feedback from community tribal leaders to facility staff on how to integrate Native Alaskan cultural initiatives into facility programs benefiting residents.
  • Ensures compliance with the Tundra Center Employee Handbook, the Alaskan Department of Corrections Policy & Procedures Manual and the Cultural Relevance Program (CRP) Operational Standards Manual.
  • Coordinates and leads CRP activities.
  • Coordinates and provides MRT, Anger Management, and domestic violence classes.
  • Coordinates and provides orientation of all new residents.
  • Organizes materials and schedule guest speakers from community organizations; provides group and individual counseling sessions for residents facilitate rehabilitation.
  • Provides continuing counseling and support to CRP residents for 30 days after completion of the program.
  • Maintains timely and accurate records. Provides monthly reports that describe the programming that was provided and the number of residents in attendance.
  • Participates in and provides individual case management, education classes and program meetings.
  • Assesses Culturally Relevant Program agenda and content for residents.
  • Schedules and facilitates resident participation in program in conjunction with resident community work service and current program requirements.
  • Prepares comprehensive individual culturally relevant program plans, case reviews and discharge summaries.
  • Using a team concept, works with all program staff to provide an information network regarding resident program participation.
  • Participates in weekly case reviews, case consultations, program meetings and monthly lectures and group activities in compliance with program objectives.
  • Coordinates cultural activities with community groups in the Yukon Kuskowin Delta Region.
  • Coordinates pre-release plans with case manager for job placement and transition assistance.
  • Participate in staff meetings by sharing observations and recommendations regarding the facility, residents and staff relations to identify and solve problems and function as a unified team.
  • Completes in-service training to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self-development. (Full time employees:  40 hours per year and proportionate hours for all other classification of employees.)
  • Maintains confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, residents, and outside agencies so that sensitive information is only given on a “need to know” basis.
  • Ensures work performed is carried-out in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. Follows facility rules on safety at all times.
  • Adhere to Companies’ attendance policy; be available to work all shifts; work overtime as required; to ensure adequate coverage of the program and to ensure the safety and security of the residents.
  • Behaves and communicates in a professional manner at all times.
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social or behavioral sciences or related field, or equivalent experience and training.
  • Two (2) years of direct experience in providing individual and group counseling.
  • Experience in public speaking and providing educational lectures.
  • Must be able to visually observe residents and staff; hear, understand, and interpret resident behavior; detect odors through sense of smell for such things as marijuana and alcohol.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Valid, active driver's license. 
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
