HJF is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist II to perform assays/procedures in strict accordance with the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Policies, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), accrediting bodies, and U.S. regulatory agencies to include the CAP, DoD Clinical Laboratory Information Program (CLIP), and the U.S. FDA. The incumbent is responsible for preparing and analyzing samples, operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art instrumentation, and ensuring adherence to all quality control procedures in support of clinical diagnostic and clinical research initiatives. The incumbent  mentors and trains junior staff and assist the Lead Technologist and/or Technical Supervisor in writing/drafting SOPs and providing input for process improvements.

 

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

 

Responsibilities

  • Performs assays in a high throughput laboratory, as well as performing specimen processing duties in accordance with laboratory SOPs, manufacturer guidelines and CAP/ FDA regulations. Ensures proper handling of samples, data entry, aliquoting of samples for storage, retrieval of samples and the monitoring of laboratory supplies and inventory.
  • Assists and mentors junior staff to identify problems that may affect test performance and reporting of patient results; works to correct any problems and immediately notifies the Lead Tech and/or Technical Supervisor.
  • Aids the Lead Technologist and/or Technical Supervisor in the coordination of administrative duties to include, but not limited to, writing/drafting of SOPs, providing input for process improvements and filing of documents following established department processes.
  • Reviews sample run data and quality control data and ensures all regulatory compliance standards are met while following established SOPs. Ensures proper entry of specimen data and testing results into databases or the laboratory information management system (LIMS), providing oversight of junior staff activities.
  • Ensures and verifies compliance with all Quality Assurance (QA) program requirements including but not limited to quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting activities and documentation in accordance with QA and departmental established SOPs.
  • Ensures all weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance is completed on all equipment in accordance with SOPs and is responsible for performing other assigned tasks in accordance with the applicable safety regulations and instructions.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the Lead Tech or Technical Supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience on a clinical laboratory required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent laboratory and technical skills.
  • Ability to work independently once trained, excellent record keeping ability, excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Ability to identify areas for process improvement for better efficiency.
  • Prior experience training staff to conduct testing in a highly regulated environment preferred.
  • Requires certification by the ASCP, AMT or other organization deemed comparable by OASD(HA) or their designee Center for Laboratory Medicine Services (CLMS) as an MLT or MT/MLS, OR successfully completed an official U.S military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician). 
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance

Physical Capabilities 

 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Licenses and Certifications 

  • Other professional licensures, certifications, or designations required: ASCP certifications for cytology, histology, microbiology, serology-immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and/or immunohematology preferred.

Work Environment

  •  This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation 

  • The likely salary range for this position is $57,650 - $71,000 annually.  This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary.  Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education. 

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.

 

Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include, but is not limited to, contacting your professional references, verification of previous employment, education and credentials, a criminal background check, and a department of motor vehicle (DMV) check if applicable.  Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
