The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. HJF is seeking a full-time Biostatistician II or III to provide biostatistical support for the Suicide Care, Prevention, and Research (CPR) Initiative, located within the Medical and Clinical Psychology department at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. The Biostatistician II or III is responsible for providing biostatistical support for multiple military suicide prevention research projects, including the conduct of clinical trials, and overseeing all aspects of the data management process. Responsibilities include: study planning, development of data collection forms and measures; development and maintenance of data collection, management, and analysis plans; data reconciliation and cleaning; tracking study recruitment; performing statistical analysis on data collected from clinical trials and other research studies; and preparation of recruitment reports and results for publication, presentation, and delivery to study sponsors.
This position will be in support of the Suicide CPR Initiative, previously known as the Laboratory for the Treatment of Suicide-Related Ideation and Behavior, which was established in 2006. Dr. Holloway, the Director of the Suicide CPR Initiative, is a clinical psychologist and an intervention scientist who is primarily interested in developing and empirically evaluating novel interventions for suicide risk reduction. The Suicide CPR Initiative is strategically in a unique position to focus on the problem of military suicide, given its origins at USU and its established partnerships with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, as well as national and international collaborators and stakeholders. Overall, the mission of the Suicide CPR Initiative is threefold: CARE: To develop effective interventions targeted at reducing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors; PREVENTION: To save lives through education, intervention, science, and advocacy; RESEARCH: To advance suicide intervention science and practice. Serves as a lead strategist for investigators regarding appropriate statistical methods as well as being primarily responsible for design, methodology, sample size estimation, and data analytic plans for grant proposals, Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, and ongoing studies.- Independently plans for and performs cross sectional and longitudinal statistical analysis, conducts power analyses, and initiates and manages the preparation of data analysis and results sections for manuscripts, conference presentations, and sponsor reports.
- Understands, develops, and executes all aspects of empirical data management (e.g., data collection form design, data entry instructions and coding manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), data management and quality assurance plans, resource planning, data status tracking).
- Takes a leadership role in organizing the data analytic team in collaboration with study PIs, and ensures quality and accuracy of work, realistic deadlines are set, and appropriate resources are available to accomplish tasks. Regularly monitors and reports on team progress, and problem-solves challenges promptly, to ensure that critical elements are proceeding on schedule.
- Works with study PIs and senior scientists to coordinate multiple, highly complex and/or large studies concurrently. Tracks recruitment numbers and prepares recruitment reports and CONSORT diagrams for manuscripts and study sponsors. Maintains study information on clinicaltrials.gov.
- Provides guidance, mentorship, and data management/ statistical training for junior-level staff and doctoral students. Serves as active contributor to team discussions about methodology and statistics, and leads meetings independently.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of statistics and study design.
- Experience in the design and execution of clnical trials.
- Proficiency in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) or other data analytic software (e.g., SAS, Stata).
- Knowledge of databases and other software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Proficiency in REDCap and other survey collection software (e.g., Qualtrics).
- Experience in data management, statistical analysis of longitudinal or repeated measurement data.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a timely manner, in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent leadership and management skills.
- Prior experience with psychology research, clinical trials, military mental health, and/or suicide research highly desired.
Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
- This position will take place primarily in a clinic, laboratory, or office setting.

Salary : $86,800 - $112,000
