Analyst Opportunity (Web Scraping, Database Management, Intermediate Excel) with IT knowledge (preferred)

Are you passionate about data analysis and ready to make an impact? Join our team as a Data Analyst and play a crucial role in driving strategic decision-making within our organization. We value your expertise in web scraping using Python, proficiency in database management (especially MySQL), and your mastery of Excel.

Here's the deal: you'll earn $60-$70k/annually (depending on your experience) to help us drive our strategic decision-making. Sounds good? Read on!

About Us:

At our law firm, we represent defendants in collection lawsuits, helping individuals navigate through difficult times. With a presence in major metro areas throughout Texas, including Houston, Dallas Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso, we strive to make a positive difference in our clients' lives. We reach out to individuals through advertising letters, covering around 15 counties.

How We Work:

To reach the individuals who need our assistance, we rely on our advertising letters. Time is of the essence, as we believe in acting swiftly. For example, if a lawsuit was filed on Monday, we aim to send the letter by Tuesday.

Data Collection:

We gather information from various county-operated public info websites. We employ two methods:

Scraper program: We use specialized scraper programs to extract data from most websites. Each website has a tailor-made scraper program.

Manual Reports: Some websites don't support scraper programs, so we manually pull reports of new lawsuit filings.

Your Main Responsibilities:

As a Data Analyst, your main mission will be to pull records on new lawsuit filings each day. You'll generate lawsuit letters from these filings and ensure their timely delivery. Here's what you'll do:

  • Web Scraping: (monitor/run existing scraper programs, develop new scraper programs)
  • Utilize Python to develop and maintain efficient web scraping scripts for collecting data from diverse online sources.
  • Identify and implement effective web scraping techniques to gather relevant and accurate data for analysis.
  • Regularly monitor and update web scraping scripts to ensure data integrity and reliability.
  • Perform data cleaning and transformation to ensure accurate and consistent data collection.

Database Management:

  • Develop and manage MySQL databases to store and organize large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
  • Design and implement efficient data models, tables, and relationships to optimize data storage and retrieval.
  • Conduct regular database maintenance activities, including data backup, indexing, and performance tuning.
  • Collaborate with the database engineer to enhance the process of obtaining and utilizing new lawsuit data.

Data Analysis and Visualization:

  • Extract and analyze data from multiple sources to identify valuable trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Develop and maintain data dashboards, reports, and visualizations to effectively communicate key findings.
  • Present your findings and recommendations clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Data Quality Assurance:

  • Implement robust data validation and quality control procedures to ensure accurate and complete data.
  • Identify data anomalies, inconsistencies, and outliers, and take necessary steps to resolve or report them.

We value open communication and efficiency. If any scrapers fail to pull in all available new case data, it is essential to inform us immediately. In such cases, we will work together to revise and deploy the necessary fixes promptly. Continuous tracking and comparison of new case data and letter generation numbers to the court's actual new case filing numbers are crucial, as courts often make changes to their websites that can impact scraper functionality.

Manual Reports:

  • Generate reports for websites that cannot be scraped using automated tools.

Advertising Letter Generation:

  • Format all newly obtained data into a mergeable format and sort it according to USPS standards.
  • Merge the data into advertising letters and print them for processing.

IT Knowledge (preferred), If you have IT knowledge, you'll also assist our law firm with asset management and tracking, including:

  • General setup and maintenance of all law firm computers, which may involve updating software, running maintenance/update applications weekly, managing passwords, and setting up new accounts.
  • Managing and troubleshooting general software and software integration issues whenever possible.
  • Maintaining an inventory of hardware (computers, printers, scanners, phones, etc.).
  • Assisting with the law firm website and collaborating with the company responsible for developing and managing the new website.

At our law firm, we are a small, close-knit team with a fast-paced caseload. We all wear different hats that may change from time to time. In addition to your primary responsibilities, you'll help track and order supplies related to lawsuit letter generation and contribute to various projects as needed. Occasionally, when the mail clerk is unavailable, you may be responsible for processing and sending out the daily advertising letters.

Intellectual Property:

  • Please note that any software developed or modified during your employment belongs to the law firm. Additionally, our methods of marketing, advertising, obtaining and tracking data, and using data for tracking, marketing, or advertising purposes are proprietary and the property of our law firm.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications:
  • Proven experience in web scraping using Python, including knowledge of libraries such as BeautifulSoup, Scrapy, or Selenium.
  • Strong understanding of MySQL database management, encompassing data modeling, indexing, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data extraction, manipulation, and querying.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel, including functions, pivot tables, and data visualization.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data sets and derive meaningful insights.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of technology and the ability to assist with IT-related tasks is a plus.

Company Benefits:

  • We offer a range of benefits to our employees, including:
  • Health Insurance: Our law firm provides a group health insurance plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. We cover 50% of an employee's premium. You can also add dependents, but you will be responsible for the entire premium for any dependent(s).
  • We have a 401k plan with matching. There are no contribution limits (aside from IRS limits). Our firm matches 100% of the first 3% of your contribution and 50% of the next 3%, providing a maximum match of 4.5%.
  • Paid Time Off and Holidays: We offer 6-8 paid holidays per year, along with two weeks of paid vacation accrued on a pay period basis.
