The Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama (¡HICA!) is a community development and advocacy organization that champions economic equality, civic engagement, and social justice for Latino/Hispanic families in Alabama. We are one of the most successful social impact organizations in Alabama and have been a major catalyst for the empowerment and economic progress of the Latinx community for 25 years. We provide over 4,000 residents annually with quality services while advocating to local and state leaders for policies that improve the quality of life of all residents. ¡HICA! achieves its goals with a staff of 30 full-time employees and works collaboratively with community partners and government agencies. ¡HICA! operates community programming in leadership development and civic engagement, college and career access, and financial literacy and economic development. We are in Birmingham, Alabama and operate on a $2.7 million budget.
Job Summary
The Civics and ESL Immigration Case Manager is a bilingual-bicultural Spanish/English individual who carries out Civics and ESL coordination and training. The case manager will also assist in the delivery of relevant immigration services and provides information, referral, and other support to immigrants and their families. This is a full-time position that reports to Citizenship and Immigration Program Manager
Related duties and responsibilities:
· Complete training necessary to obtain and maintain full or partial Department of Justice accreditation; perform duties as a legal representative and continue to advance relevant skills
· Promote civic integration, instruction US history, and government for citizenship test preparation Promote civic integration, instruction of US history, and government for citizenship test preparation
· Fosters activities that promote civic and linguistic participation
· Administers ESL instruction in reading, writing, and speaking for the naturalization test and naturalization process
· Teaches on the naturalization interview and USCIS Form N-400
· Informs on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, including information on voting rights and responsibilities
· Implement course structure, which includes at least 40 hours of citizenship instruction with a managed enrollment
· ESL curriculum development, materials development, and assessment
· Coordinates and participates in community outreach that promote naturalization work, potential workshop locations and recruitment of new students for ESL and Civics Program
· Screen constituents to approve for eligibility of immigration services, including naturalization
· File Naturalization applications and follow up with case management
· Appearance at clients’ interviews when applicable
· Creates, updates, and maintains programmatic social media as needed
· Supports the CIP team with case management work
· Works closely with interns/volunteers and supervises their activities
· Ensures data is entered accurately and in a timely basis into organizational databases
· Completes timesheets, work plans and other reporting as needed in an accurate and timely manner
· Actively participates and represents ¡HICA! at community and coalition meetings and events
· Complies with all ¡HICA! policies and procedures
· Participates in ¡HICA! functions as needed and assigned by Program Manager
Qualifications:
● Education: Minimum of High School Diploma (any post-secondary degree/certification over this is preferred) and at least 2 years of work in advocacy
● Prior experience working with USCIS immigration cases (including eligibility to be DOJ accredited through ¡HICA!) is a plus.
● Bicultural/cross-cultural experience with Bilingual: English/Spanish demonstrated proficiency Strong communication skills (written and verbal) are essential
● Must work well independently, and have strong organizational and record-keeping skills
● Ability to interact with clients and Latino/immigrant community members in respectful manner and assume responsibility independently to do the same
● Working knowledge in Microsoft Office
● Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
● Must model and advocate for the mission, values, and goals of ¡HICA!
● Knowledge of TESOL methodology preferred, including English language teaching techniques; or readiness to learn and complete TESOL certification in 6 months
● Valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and reliable transportation.
● Must be able to pass a background check
Compensation:
Competitive annual salary ranges between $42K and $45K based on experience. Excellent benefits package that includes Blue Cross Blue Shield Health and Dental (Vision optional) paid at 100% for each employee with coverage starting on first day of employment, 3 weeks PTO & sick leave plus 11 paid holidays, 2 weeks closure at end of year, one week closure mid-summer break, and Retirement Plan with 3% company match after one year of service.
