Director of Veterinary Services

The Director of Veterinary Services leads the clinical care of sick and injured mice at JAX, leads and provides overall administrative direction and coordination for Surgical Services and assists and trains other CMQ veterinarians in assuring that JAX policies and procedures are appropriate to ensure the health and welfare of JAX mice; continued compliance with relevant laws and regulations; and continued AAALACi accreditation. Responsibilities · Provides clinical veterinary care for all animals housed in Maine facilities. Includes oversight and direction for Veterinary Services including Clinical and Surgical Services. · Provides advisory and consultation services to internal and external clients. · Serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees in Bar Harbor; writes and reviews routine procedures and SOPs; provides technical expertise and guidance to facilitate protocol development. · Leads and participates in research studies/projects in collaboration with JMCRS, In Vivo, Quality Team and other members of CMQ. Participates in study design, implementation, data analysis and reporting. · Responds to questions and concerns raised by JAX employees and customers related to the care, use, health, and welfare of mice. Assists the Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs in responding to and resolving animal care and welfare issues that threaten to compromise the Laboratory's ability to conduct animal research or distribute animals. Signs health certificates for international shipments. Qualifications · DVM/VMD degree and a U.S. license to practice veterinary medicine; possesses qualifications needed to become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Maine and to become certified by USDA in Maine. · At least 5 years experience working as a laboratory animal veterinarian; experience working with mice is a plus. · Board certification in a relevant veterinary specialty, e.g., ACLAM. · Skill in reading and comprehending technical specifications, laws, and codes as they relate to regulatory compliance. · Proven ability to analyze and synthesize information and demonstrated resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to problems and initiative in presenting alternatives and implementing solutions to ensure effective change and/or eliminate or mitigate potential negative effects. · Excellent initiative and organizational skills to prioritize complex tasks, projects, and workflow, and use independent judgment to make decisions regarding operations and deadlines. · Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to achieve exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication. · Ability to operate computer hardware and software applications that would normally be encountered in a business setting.
