The Jackson Laboratory, located in Bar Harbor, Maine currently is seeking applicants for the position of Environmental Services Technician !

Working under limited supervision, the Environmental Services Technician II position is the second level in the career ladder for Environmental Services Technicians, where level II has the knowledge and experience to handle more technical tasks.

Environmental Services Technicians have the primary responsibility of cleaning properties owned or leased by The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) to promote the health and safety of The Jackson Laboratory’s visitors and its employees.

This includes traditional janitorial tasks like mopping and dusting, but also requires an understanding of proper handling and disposal of biological waste.

Monday-Friday, 3 : 30pm - 12 : 00am.

Starting pay rate is $21.24 per hour plus $3 shift differential.

Must have the ability to wear nitrile surgical gloves for up to 60% of the 8 hour shift!

Responsibilities :

  • Clean and supply designated building areas (strip, scrub, and re-coat floors, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, wet-dry mopping, ceiling vents, horizontal / vertical surfaces, glass / mirrors, etc.)
  • Clean / sanitize restrooms and stock them with supplies.
  • Operate a Class 8 commercial rear load trash truck, gather / transport trash and empty / clean wastebaskets and trash containers.

Handle bio-waste and / or recycling materials.

  • Notify management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs, operate JAX multi surface floor machines, operate exterior window washing equipment, make minor equipment adjustments / repairs, maintain equipment, re-stock / maintain supply assigned area(s), move furniture, special projects, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to understand written / verbal instructions and communicate effectively with others (to clearly and effectively exchange information)
  • Ability to understand and follow Federal, State, and JAX safety rules and regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment as task require (PPE).
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects up to 50 pounds and walk up to 20,000 steps per day (equating to 10 miles per day) as standing, bending, and walking must be constant throughout an 8 hour shift aside from prescribed break times.
  • Ability to acquire the knowledge to safely operate equipment used for cleaning, e.g. vacuum cleaners, floor cleaning equipment, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to review and briefly respond to email and enter electronic time within 1 month of hire
  • Successful completion of the JAX Ladder Safety & JAX Facilities Maintenance Training program within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to pass computer administered ISSA Cleaning CITS 101 and field proficiency testing within 6 months of hire
  • Successful completion of JAX Environmental Services Technician training program(Department Guidelines; Basics of Cleaning and Restroom Care within one year of hire (score of 75% or higher))
  • Self-motivated with the ability to organize time effectively, demonstrated ability to manage details and provide excellent client service skills

Must be able to present oneself in a positive manner through appearance, attitude and behavior

  • Three years’ experience in an academic, industrial, or institutional custodial services environment
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee an assigned area without the daily oversight of an environmental services supervisor
  • Demonstrated proficiency and utilization of MS Outlook and Tablet computer such as MS Surface Pro
  • Proven ability to strip, scrub, and re-coat floors; to perform minor non-technical repairs to buildings, equipment, and fixtures such as replacing overhead light bulbs, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate multi surface floor machines such as ride on extractors / scrubbers / burnishers; walk behind extractors / scrubber / burnishers;

propane floor stripping machines; high reach window cleaning equipment, et al.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate all functions of a Class 8 commercial rear load trash truck within the Bar Harbor campus grounds
  • Demonstrated competency and successful completion of the JAX Environmental Services Technician training course (Floor Care Advanced) (score of 75% or higher)
  • The Environmental Services Technician II position is currently scheduled for second shift Monday-Friday, but are subject to working day shift, third shift, and / or weekends to meet business requirements of the Facilities Department and The Jackson Laboratory.
  • May require work scheduled and unscheduled overtime (as needed)
  • May require occasional travel for reasons such as training or project support including work at the Ellsworth campus or other JAX properties in Bar Harbor
  • Other miscellaneous duties may be required to be performed based on needs of the day
