2024 PhD Graduate - Model-Based Systems Engineering Architect - Space Systems of

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
Laurel, MD Full Time
POSTED ON 5/1/2024
Description

Are you looking to work on complex challenges by applying sophisticated systems engineering and development principles in a digital environment?

Are you an "end-to-end systems thinker" with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience who is looking to have an impact on our United States Space Force's (USSF's) defense programs?

Are you searching for a collaborative, diverse work environment where you can innovate and apply state-of-the-art systems engineering practices to ground breaking programs?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a PhD MBSE Architect to digitally design space missions and systems-of-systems for space control architectures. Someone who wants to join a hardworking team of engineers to develop technologies, architectures, decision aids, and prototypes that enable war-fighters to harness a diverse set of assets to accomplish a variety of missions. We provide vital mission engineering, systems engineering, and software engineering support to nationally important space capabilities for the Department of Defense (DoD). You will contribute to developing designs, architecture frameworks, model profiles, and systems engineering processes that are cohesively implemented within a larger digital engineering framework (modeling and simulation, software/hardware engineering, test and evaluation, data science and visualization etc.). We believe in building diverse teams, continually growing our capabilities, and cultivating a work environment that embraces innovation, integrity, trust, and teamwork.

As a member of our team you will...

  • Develop, promote, and integrate MBSE artifacts for the design and implementation of complex systems and architectures crucial to the war-fighter
  • Learn to engage with sponsors and channel their needs into conceiving novel space architectures
  • Explore and decompose high-level mission needs into functional and architectural views of a system
  • Develop novel frameworks to connect system models, analytical tools, and visualization environments across system life-cycle
  • Work closely with a diverse team of developers and systems engineers to derive system needs and develop overall solutions that will support the USSF

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are completing a PhD in systems engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, statistics, or other engineering or related field
  • Have a strong desire to explore new space-focused technologies, and learn systems development methods via digital engineering
  • Possess strong analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Understand how system requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation activities are enabled by MBSE across the engineering lifecycle
  • Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a final TS/SCI level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have systems architecting experience and the ability to develop SysML diagrams, activity flows, and finite state machines using Cameo/MagicDraw or Sparx EA
  • Have relevant INCOSE, Object Management Group (OMG) or other systems engineering certifications
  • Have knowledge of space systems, space dynamics, space operations, and space environments
  • Have knowledge or experience in DoD doctrine, operations, battle management, fires, and planning.
  • Have worked with architecting frameworks such as the DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or Unified Architecture Framework
  • Have familiarity with USSF acquisition programs.
  • Have used software project and configuration management tools to perform issue tracking, automated unit testing, continuous integration / DevOps (such as GitLab, TeamCity, Jenkins), and version control tools (e.g. Git).
  • Possess a final TS or TS/SCI level security clearance.
