Sub-editor | £28,000 to £32,000 | London (hybrid) | 12 months FTC (full time, maternity cover)

The role
We are looking for a sub-editor to join our friendly content team, to edit digital content to the highest standards for education leaders who rely on our guidance, resources and CPD every day.
This is an unusually varied and stimulating subbing role, requiring rigour, creativity, and deep empathy with our members to quality assure an ever-expanding range of content formats for our different audiences, including articles, downloadable resources, videos and elearning courses.
Our sub-editors work closely with our in-house content writers and producers to make sure everything we publish meets our members’ needs and is accurate, clear, practical and easy to use. As a team, we work hard to deliver content that helps over 160,000 education leaders take confident, decisive action in their schools and trusts.
You will:
- Quality assure and edit written guidance, practical resources, training materials, audio-visual content and more, to uphold our brand, tone of voice and house style
- Move deftly between editing rigorously for accuracy, practical value, clarity, tone and polish, and creative copywriting that engages and persuades
- Uphold good practice in content design, instructional design and accessible content, and make sure we adhere to copyright rules
- Provide constructive feedback, mentoring and training to equip our content writers and producers to apply our editorial principles and create content of the highest standard
- Work at pace, making excellent editorial decisions and prioritising carefully to help us deliver our content roadmaps on time, in full
The ideal person
You will:
- Have experience of editing written content for online consumption, and a good understanding of what makes good online content
- Have first-class skills in quality assuring and editing written content to high editorial standards, including upholding guidelines on brand, tone of voice and house style
- Be able to interpret complex information (such as legislation and data) and distil it, accurately, into a more digestible form
- Be willing and keen to stretch your critical thinking skills as a sub-editor to content of different types and formats (e.g. videos and training content), and to apply more creative copywriting skills as needed
- Be able to make confident, robust editorial and workflow/delivery decisions under pressure
- Have excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Take a keen interest in the education sector in England, especially the school sector
It would be nice if you:
- Have knowledge of the disciplines of content design and/or instructional design
- Have experience of reviewing or editing content types beyond written articles, such as videos, elearning courses or multimedia training presentations
- Have an understanding of copyright law
- Have a current understanding of the school sector and issues affecting it
- Have experience of mentoring, coaching or training others to support performance
