What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Officer position at The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod?

MISSION OF CONCORDIA HISTORICAL INSTITUTE
As the official department of archives and history of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Concordia Historical Institute serves as general advisory agency for historical interests within synodical offices, departments, educational institutions and congregations. CHI is charged with preserving and promoting Lutheran history, especially the history surrounding the LCMS. This is done through actively collecting, organizing, cataloging and preserving relevant documents, photographs, books, artifacts, and fine art — and making these historical items available to inform and inspire the church and community.

VISION OF CONCORDIA HISTORICAL INSTITUTE
CHI strives to be the premier provider of Lutheran historical resources in North America.

1. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Development Officer reports to and is under the supervision of the Executive Director. The Development Officer makes regular use of the CHI donor database, CHI website and social media accounts, e-blasts, seasonal mailings, and Historical Footnotes to cultivate and strengthen donor relations. The Development Officer also submits quarterly business performance reports to the ED and CHI Board of Directors.

2. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Development Officer works closely with the ED in furthering unrestricted gifts to CHI. This is done by aggressively expanding CHI’s donor base while skillfully cultivating and strengthening relationships with donors around North America and beyond.

The Development Officer also works with CHI volunteers, CHI members, and members of the CHI Board of Governors in seeking out prospective donors and members.

3. Core Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Development Officer is to further CHI’s fiscal resources (short and long-term) in an intentional, strategic, and effective way that increases value and reduces financial risk of the Institute.
This is accomplished through planning, implementation, and analysis of:

A. An intentional strategy of donor and prospective donor engagement leading to annual memberships and opportunities to financially contribute through two CHI’s major annual campaigns (spring and end-of-year).

B. Regular events (physical and online) to cultivate new donors and members (maintaining CHI’s donor database), while increasing value of CHI services to existing donors and members (on local/congregational, district, and church body levels).

C. Regular events, visits, and mailings to secure estate gifts.

D. Donor development components in CHI’s Annual Awards Banquet and Annual Walther Roundtable.

E. Strengthen donor relationship with sponsoring entities (underwriters) for events and projects.

F. Coordinate with Executive Director in deepening donor and member identification with the mission and vision of CHI leading to increased financial contributions.

G. Maintain donor and member confidentiality, upholding Christian ethics, as well as timely and accurate documentation of expenses incurred in dealing with donors and prospective donors.

H. Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director in furthering CHI’s mission and vision.

4. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A. Bachelor's degree.

B. Minimum of one to two years of experience In development field, or a related field with transferrable skills.

5. CORE COMPETENCIES
A. LOYALTY TO LCMS AND CHI — Faithfulness to Holy Scripture and Lutheran Confessions, complete support of doctrinal position of the LCMS, and genuine passion and drive to communicate and advance the mission and ministry of CHI.

B. SELF-MOTIVATED TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS THAT “TREASURE AND TRUMPET” THE HISTORY OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH — Demonstrated ability to reach out and connect in developing giving relationships with members, donors, users and prospective donors.

C. EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONS MANAGEMENT SKILLS — Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbally and through written materials) in winsome and motivational ways that give opportunities for donors and members to support.

D. ABILITY AND DESIRE TO TRAVEL TO PROMOTE GIVING OPPORTUNITIES — Willingness to “get out of the building” on a daily basis and connect with donors, members, and prospective donors in efficient and effective ways.

6. PERFORMANCE REVIEW
The Executive Director will review mutually agreed-upon performance metrics of the Development Officer twice a year.
