If this sounds like you, Montgomery Parks Facilities Management Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking a motivated, highly energetic and organized professional Park Facilities Maintenance Worker (Concrete/Mason Shop Helper) to perform a broad range of skills under general supervision, performs general and some skilled park maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will perform semi-skilled manual work assisting the concrete/mason shop. This is a park/facilities maintenance worker at the entry level, and will be expected to learn to operate all types of equipment and assist our Senior Concrete/Masons in both regular preventative maintenance projects and in difficult specialized assignments. Incumbents of this class regularly perform assignments as part of a group but may occasionally work alone. Performs related duties as assigned. This position reports to the Concrete/Mason Shop supervisor and works primarily in the Mason Shop, and will be asked to assist the Painting Shop on an as-needed basis.

Please Note: The salary range listed above represents the earning potential for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience.

This position is eligible for reclassification to a Mason I upon the employee (1) passing their 12-month probationary period and (2) performing all assigned duties and responsibilities at the Mason I level for a minimum of six months.

Examples of Important Duties

Performs Semi-Skilled Manual Work


  • Unloads and loads tools, equipment, supplies, and materials on and off trucks, etc.
  • Drives trucks to deliver workers, equipment, and supplies to and from job sites.
  • Uses hand tools for digging, sweeping, cleaning, general labor, painting, and demolition, as per required.
  • Cleans job site of trash, debris, and transports it to the dump as needed.
Performs Semi-Skilled Trade Assignments Involving Some Complexity and Responsibility
  • Support skilled trades workers with concrete/masonry projects on layout of jobs throughout duration of project.
  • Assists the masons in installation of steel products such as lintels, beams, rebar, metal forms, and concrete wire.
  • Assists the masons in repair and installation of various types of plaster, stucco, and related components.
  • Assists in inspections and maintenance of concrete/masonry and painting projects on an annual schedule.
Maintains Commission Equipment, Tools, and Shop Vehicles in Proper Working Order
  • Cleans and performs periodic maintenance of small equipment, hand tools, and vehicles.
  • Washes exterior of vehicles; keeps interior of vehicles clean and orderly.
  • Supports inventory control by counting, categorizing, and properly storing miscellaneous parts and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in obtaining Concrete/Masonry trades experience and training
  • Cooperative spirit, excellent communication, creative thinking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic, ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to communicate in another language a plus.
  • Possesses a valid Driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • 17 years of age.

Class/Specification: Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker

Working Conditions:
Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned. May work weekends, evenings and holidays. Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy). Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
