The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Southern Region Parks Division, seeks an experienced Park Manager I to manage area maintenance and operation programs working the Clinton and Fort Washington, Maryland geographic areas. This position manages a work program with responsibilities to include personnel management, asset inventory, budget and procurement, project management, and emergency management to support the Senior Park Manager. Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position will have a work schedule of Monday-Friday from 6:00am – 2:45pm but maybe required to a shifted schedule based on weather emergency and event management. This position is an essential employee and manages multiple high profile Regional Parks and Facilities which may require after hours work.

Hiring Range: $51,860 - $71,852 with growth potential to $91,845. Salary commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Supervise teams involved in various projects such as the maintenance and renovation of parks, buildings and grounds maintenance to provide exceptions park experiences with a focus on patron safety, environmental preservation, and sustainability.
  • Identifies needs and develops park maintenance plans for grounds and facilities within a geographical area.
  • Plan, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work of designated personnel; counsel staff on ways to improve performance. Assist in candidate selection, and train new staff members.
  • Conduct Park inspections to troubleshoot problems identified, generate service requests, and follow through to ensure problems are corrected.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff and supervise the operation of major equipment (e.g., tractor, snowplow, backhoe, spreader) as well as tree maintenance activities.
  • Participate as part of a team with architects, engineers, consultants, etc. for park development projects.
  • Participate with supervisor in budget preparation and development. Monitor and track expenditures for programs and projects. Research and initiate purchase requisitions for units. Monitor and track expenditures for programs and projects.
  • Meet with the community organizations, citizens, and the department to develop special programs or projects to meet identified needs or to resolve problems.
  • Provide general assistance to park visitors. Enforce Park rules. Assist proper authorities with investigating accidents, fires, and crimes.
  • Meet with citizens to discuss complaints about park facilities or maintenance (for example, drainage, landscaping, encroachment on park property). Work with citizens and customers to resolve any concerns that may arise.
  • Controls expenditures within the constraints of approved funds. Initiates bid procedures, procures cost quotations and estimates, initiates and reviews purchase requisitions and check requests. Estimates and tracks revenues and expenditures by comparing actuals to budget.
  • Recommends operating and capital improvement budgets and produces projections for future park improvement projects. Serves on departmental and interagency committees for the purpose of coordinating and developing programs, resolving problems of mutual interest, or exchanging information. Works with community groups, park and recreation councils, and citizens to resolve problems and promote park operations goals. Investigates complaints involving highly sensitive issues and problems.
  • Ensures coordination with internal and external stakeholders and assists with providing programmatic compliance for successful park operation communication between multiple agencies such as Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Public Schools, and community recreational organizations.
  • Supervises the documentation and prepares records, reports, and other correspondence relating to park conditions and required maintenance. Reviews and approves records of revenues and expenditures, inventories of supplies and equipment, accident/injuries, memoranda, activity reports, brochures, etc.
  • Plans, schedules, and assigns duties to a diverse team to accomplish organizational goals for park safety inspection for safety.
  • Conducts performance management reviews and counsels’ coaches/staff for improvement. Develops and approves performance improvement plans for employees.
  • Conducts, or ensures, training of staff in the development of documentation and compliance standards. Approves timecards and leave requests.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years of park maintenance/operations experience to include grounds management, tree management, inspections, project management, and supervision.
  • Computer software knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite and work order software.
  • Excellent Communication skills to include written, oral, presentations with internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in park management/administration, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, or a related field and one year of park management experience that included supervision and leadership of a staff; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
    • Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
    • Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
