Curatorial Assistant, Asian Art
The Curatorial Assistant, Asian Art is responsible for a variety of administrative and curatorial tasks related to both daily and long-range departmental and institutional operations for the Asian art collections of the Museum.
The position serves two curatorial departments, containing three curatorial staff members with occasional fellows/interns and volunteers, with approximately 10,000 works of art, producing 4-5 potential collections rotations/focus exhibitions each year.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Department Administration: Provide administrative support for the department by overseeing the maintenance of all department files and records; tracking/assisting in the preparation of check requests, budgets, reports, and annual documents; compiling and organizing data and statistics for reports and maintaining the daily appointment and travel schedule for the curators; make travel arrangements as requested; process travel expense reports and check requests.
  • Department Liaison: Act as the departments’ liaison within the museum and with the public by managing inbound and outbound communications, correspondence via telephone and email representing the department and the museum in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner.
  • Patrons and Art-World Colleagues: Develop and maintain knowledge of the departments’ donors and patrons as well as colleagues at peer institutions and dealers; maintain and update departments’ database of patrons and contacts.
  • Communication: In tandem with the Curator(s) work with Education, Development, and Marketing & Communications staff to prepare and edit materials to interpret, promote, and publicize exhibitions, collections, installations, and related public programs. Assists with gathering and writing exhibition- and collection-related information pertinent to grant applications, final reports, and other institutional needs.
  • Curatorial Development: As directed by the curator, write object labels, potentially generate original exhibitions for focus spaces, lead collection-based and museum-wide tours, assist with the mentoring of Fellows/interns, and volunteers, and serve on committees/task forces.
  • Curatorial Support: Provide support to curatorial projects initiated within the department. This includes gathering and analyzing art historical and scholarly texts, visual and object location information, and budgetary data, compiled to initiate and implement exhibitions and other curatorial project activities. After receiving art handling training, assist with viewing appointments.
  • Programming: Work with the Public Programming department to plan and coordinate public programs related to exhibitions and collections, as requested. Assists with coordination of logistical needs for artist/curator visits including arranging honoraria, travel, lodging, meals, and any event-related logistics. Assists with hosting visiting artists/curators, including itineraries, transportation, and entertainment
  • Internship Development: Assist with the training and supervision of the activity and development of Fellows/interns and project assistants as appropriate.
  • Other: Complete all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the departments and the institution.
CORE CAPABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Education/
Experience
  • B.A, Degree in Art History or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two – Five years’ experience working in a curatorial environment welcome, but not required.
  • Knowledge and experience in standard museum and with general curatorial practices and understanding how the art world (of art institutions, galleries, artists, curators, auction houses) operates.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Asian cultures highly desirable.
  • Reading ability in one major Asian language very useful

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Working conditions are typically that of an office environment. Works primarily at a desk. Work is performed primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors in public spaces. Perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions. Perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.
Often required to move about their work area, between galleries and storage areas, ascend and descend stairs; and stand and/or sit for extended periods of time. The Curatorial Assistant is occasionally required to lift, drag and/or move up to 15 pounds unassisted. The employee is required to identify, observe and assess visually or otherwise.


Hours/Travel Expectations
Monday to Friday Workweek. May occassionally work nights, weekends, and holidays.
