The New Center is searching for an Executive Director with the moxie to take on the stale ideas that dominate our politics and to lead an exciting new phase for our organization.
Our mission is to establish the ideas and the community to create a powerful political center that can counter the extreme forces tearing America apart. As the Executive Director of The New Center, you’ll lead our ambitious growth plans for 2022 and beyond, which will involve developing and marketing political and policy ideas that can engage and excite the millions of Americans who demand something better from our politics.
Job Overview and Responsibilities
Right now, there is neither a centrist policy agenda nor a critical mass of political leaders the center can rally around. This is what The New Center aims to change—by articulating an optimistic, compelling, and commonsense vision for solving America’s toughest challenges.
Founded in 2018, The New Center isn’t just splitting the difference between left and right. We’re willing to take a stand, be it for the First Amendment or against the monopolistic and abusive practices of major technology companies, and we’ve explored issues ranging from immigration and health care to climate change and voting. Now, we are looking for an Executive Director who is both a contrarian thinker and a capable manager to expand our headcount, our impact in the public debate, and our support among potential funders and the general public.
As the Executive Director of The New Center, you will:
- Be responsible for the planning, organization, and direction of our operations and programs as well as budget oversight.
- Oversee The New Center’s marketing efforts and set key benchmarks for organizational growth across digital platforms.
- Develop new platforms to elevate our voice, including our emerging effort to identify and call out media bias and systemic partisanship.
- Manage our team of policy analysts and our digital team and help recruit and hire additional team members.
- Work in concert with our team of senior advisors to align on both organizational strategy and tactics.
- Participate in policy debates to hone The New Center’s perspective on priority issues.
- Plan virtual or in-person events among thought leaders, journalists, elected officials, and their staff keyed to the release of content or polling from The New Center.
- Develop fundraising appeals.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- A bachelor’s degree in political science, government, public policy, international relations, or a related area. Advanced degree a plus, but not required.
- 5 years’ experience working in a public policy or political role, be it on a campaign, in government, or with a non-profit, advocacy, or political consulting firm.
- Experience in fundraising, marketing, or digital strategy is a plus.
- A proven record of managing and motivating teams of people.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- A thorough understanding of public policy and the political forces that are making government increasingly dysfunctional.
- A passion for reinvigorating the political center in America.
- Comfort working with a diverse team of thinkers and strategists.
