What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Features Editor position at The New Republic?
The New Republic is looking for an experienced temporary features editor with expertise in long-form narrative features and political analysis to join our office for six months, from roughly mid-March to mid-September.
For this full-time position, based in either New York or Washington, D.C., the editor will be expected to commission and edit features of 5,000 to 6,500 words for the print magazine—engaging stories about important social issues, incremental reporting on Capitol Hill’s legislative jostling, analyses of long-running ideological and policy debates, profiles of major players on the political scene—participate in idea generation, and assist in podcast production. Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ editing experience and possess a rich network of writers with diverse subject-area specialties. The right candidate will have knowledge of, and comfort with, the substance of policy—and the ability to weave that knowledge into compelling narratives and arguments. Those with writing experience, ideally for a general-interest audience, are also strongly preferred. Experience in podcast production is helpful.
To apply, please submit your résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’re right for this job. The cover letter should be tailored to TNR and show an understanding of our sensibility and history. Please include links to five articles you’ve edited and at least one clip of your own writing.
Annual salary (pro-rated for the period worked) will be commensurate with experience; the range is between $102,000 and $112,000. The New Republic is committed to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.
The deadline for applications is February 15.
