Position: Manager, Professional and Community Learning

Who we are
The News Literacy Project (NLP), a national, nonpartisan education nonprofit, is seeking a manager, professional and community learning to join our professional and community learning team. Founded in 2008, NLP is the leading provider of news literacy education for middle and high school students, primarily through its signature e-learning platform, Checkology ® .

This is a great opportunity for you to support our work providing engaging, relevant, and actionable news literacy education to audiences of educators and other adult learners.

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following: A minimum of three to five years of experience in event planning and coordination, and/or providing project management and administrative support in a fast-paced organization. Experience in an educational setting is a plus. Experience with project management and calendar applications, especially managing multiple individual and team calendars. Experience with foundational functions of Microsoft Excel; advanced proficiency a plus. Experience with event registration and planning platforms such as Eventbrite, Sched and other s as well as reporting related to these events. P roficiency with Zoom and other videoconferencing platforms. Familiarity with SurveyMonkey, Google Forms or similar is essential. Strong written and verbal communication. Exceptional independent time management and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at any given time while working remotely and without regular, direct supervision.
We’re looking for someone who will hit the ground running, understands the critical need for news literacy education, is unafraid to experiment, and can work both independently and collaboratively.

This position reports to the senior director, professional and community learning.

About the position
The primary responsibility of NLP’s professional and community learning team is the development, facilitation, and management of professional learning programs for educators and news literacy education for adult learners. Our team works in close collaboration as part of NLP’s educator engagement group, as well as with other internal teams, including development and communication and external partners. The manager of professional learning leads the project management and administrative capabilities for this team. We’re looking for someone who is energized by our mission and is full of exciting, creative ideas for implementing and managing systems to keep our work on track and ensure we achieve our goals in support of NLP’s mission.

Major responsibilities include:
Build and manage relationships with key stakeholders, including school districts and news organization partners. Manage registrations for professional learning events, including building registration pages, responding to registrant questions, reconciling attendance, and coordinating reporting for internal and external partners. Create and maintain feedback surveys for various professional learning events. Extract data from surveys for internal and external reporting as well as team metrics. Coordinate event planning logistics for in-person and virtual NewsLitCamps and other professional learning events. This includes travel logistics, coordinating with site contacts for set-up of events, managing attendee registration and check-in and planning meals and refreshments for attendees. Work with NLP’s development team to research and identify new potential NewsLitCamp locations, partner school districts and local news partners. Coordinate and support large-scale videoconference events, including scheduling, troubleshooting, communicating links for accessing feeds and monitoring sessions as needed. Maintain shared resource folders for professional learning sessions and ensuring educator access. Track and verify participation of educators in professional learning events and issue certificates for educators to track professional learning hours. Maintain calendar of professional learning events and projects and coordinate with internal teams and external partners for scheduling and reporting. This position requires occasional travel (approximately 10 trips per year) for professional learning events and biannual staff retreats.

About you
In addition to the qualifications noted above, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:
Experience collaborating with colleagues and external partners asynchronously using various communication and resource sharing applications. Our team routinely uses SharePoint, Notion, BaseCamp , AirTable , Slack, and Zoom. Familiarity with these programs (or similar) is beneficial. E xperience and comfort with a virtual work environment (both technology tools and personal skills) and s trong organizational and time management skills , with a demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines and deliverables under variable constraints. A strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges in today’s information landscape and well as trends in misinformation and its spread, especially on social media.

Compensation and benefits
This is a full-time position. The starting annual salary for this role is $ 6 0,000 . NLP also offers outstanding benefits, including bonus, health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan match and more.
