Description

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent day and boarding school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to roughly 500 students in grades 6 through 12, including about 80 international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory. The Northwest School seeks a full-time teacher  who will teach 12th grade Physics and 9th grade Physical Science to Upper School students beginning in the 2020-2021 school year.

At Northwest, we endeavor to inspire and connect students with science, creating a sense of wonder, curiosity, and respect for the natural world. Our science classes prioritize the process of science and cultivate scientific thinking. Learning to ask salient questions is at the core of our science program and open-ended lab work teaches students to devise ways of exploring and testing scientific concepts in order to make sense of the world. 
 
The 12th grade Physics course is algebra-based although some students have already or are concurrently taking calculus. Current units cover kinematics, dynamics, energy, introductory electricity and magnetism.
 
The 9th grade Physical Science is mostly project-based and students to learn to use scientific models to build understanding through units in astronomy, engineering design thinking, light and optics, and atomic theory.
 

Essential Functions Include:

Teach four sections of science to Upper School students. 

Collaborate and actively team-teach with other teachers at the grade-level. 

Coordinate curricula with other department and grade-level teachers. 

Plan and teach a 2-week intensive course, known as a Summit, each year.

Advise a group of students.

Cultivate positive family partnerships.

Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school based in- service; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student social-emotional learning, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability, and global perspective.

A bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Demonstrated success with culturally responsive pedagogy.

Experience teaching a diverse student body through a social justice lens.

Genuine enjoyment working with teenagers.

Preferred Qualifications:

A master's degree and more than 5 years of teaching experience is preferred.
