Job Title: Ceramics Lecturer Department: Arts and Sciences | Art The Department of Art, within the College of Arts & Sciences, invites applications from artists with an MFA degree who are engaged with Ceramics as one of their primary research interests. The Department seeks a (teaching) artist with the ability to provide conceptual and technical instruction in traditional, interdisciplinary, and emerging ceramics practices with a focus on engagement in social analysis and cultural critique. The fundamentals of ceramics are set within a series of courses which reference the rich history of ceramic practice in relationship to contemporary approaches, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, mold-making, and glaze chemistry. The successful candidate should demonstrate a capacity to teach introductory to advanced courses in ceramics, including knowledge and experience with both wheel-throwing and hand-building; glaze formulation; and firing electric, gas (low- and high-fire), raku, and soda. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with a full-time ceramic technician, graduate students, lecturers, and faculty in overseeing the studio classroom/workshop facilities, while actively participating in the development of interdisciplinary art and ceramics curriculum. In addition to teaching load of three to four courses per semester, including a combination of day and evening assignments, the successful candidate will be expected to participate and assist in undergraduate assessment for general education courses and portfolio reviews. They will be expected to contribute to departmental and campus activities that support the college mission and further diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism efforts. We especially welcome artists from underrepresented groups in the arts to apply for this position. New Associated Faculty Lecturers at OSU may participate in workshops with the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning that are specifically tailored to the Department of Art as well as other offerings that address inclusive pedagogy. Candidates may also engage with centers and departments across the university such as Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS), Ethnic Studies, African and African American Studies and within the broader Columbus community. This appointment is full time, for an initial term of 1 year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Salary Range $35,000 - $48,000/yr. Salary is determinant based on education, experience and final course load taught per year. Studio space will be provided. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Teach Ceramics classes covering wheel throwing, hand construction, glazing, and firing for high and low temperature clay implementation at the beginning, intermediate and advanced level. Integrate history of ceramics, contemporary ceramics, and craft into coursework and project development. Teach clay processes for utilitarian and sculptural expression. Remain current in the field through personal practice, technological advances, and professional development opportunities. Develop and contribute to an interdisciplinary department of art within a public research university through their creative work and teaching. Teach assigned courses in accordance with assigned course outline of record. Participate in learning outcome development and assessments. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities and college, division, and department policies. Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including strategies to facilitate success for under-represented populations, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions. Mentor undergraduate students with optional informal engagement with graduate students interested in range of art practices. Be an active member of the department, college, and university community through presence and participation in teaching and studio practice. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required. Knowledge and use of photographic equipment and techniques as applied to photographing ceramic objects. Its history includes many artists important to 20th century ceramics. The area consists of one faculty member, a full-time shop supervisor, and visiting artists and lecturers who teach and interact with students throughout the year. Each student is encouraged through a supportive environment to develop a particular aesthetic that relies on persistent curiosity and hard work. Students in the area are exposed to a wide range of traditional and contemporary concepts and techniques and are encouraged to take independent study hours with visiting artists and faculty throughout the Department of Art. Scheduled group critiques with graduate students and faculty are productive vehicles for understanding each other's work and for discussing tangents and issues relevant to all aspects of art making.
