Job Title: Researcher Department: FAES | School of Environment and Natural Resources This role will play a critical role to further both the research at the Lal Carbon Center and to teach courses within the School of Environment and Natural Resources Key responsibilities: Teaches ENR 5261 Environmental Soil Physics and ENR 5268 Soil and Climate Change during Spring Semester Prepares syllabi, provides lectures for both classes, administers weekly labs for Environmental Soil Physics, holds office hours, grades assignments, communicates with students and submit grades. Designs and conducts independent complex experimental research; performs soil and plant sampling and analyses, and evaluates soil quality/health in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. Evaluates, collates, tabulates, and synthesizes data relevant to training of farmers and for identification of carbon-positive management practices. Participates in interdisciplinary research and graduate studies, in securing extramural funding, and publishes in refereed journals. Conducts critical analysis of literature relevant to the research being undertaken Provides statistical consultations and designs statistical computation; undertakes data analysis, assisting with other members of the research team as needed, assisting with grant proposals and/or manuscript submissions. Engages and collaborates with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and through it with growers and stakeholders to identify critical research and information needs. Supports on-farm research initiatives. Conveys difficult, complex or sensitive information; facilitates productive dialogue; disseminates applied research findings to the scientific community, growers and industry associations, farmers/landowners, citizen groups, and other stakeholders in the LAC region via workshops, journal publications, extension fact sheets and bulletins, field days, online communications, and other appropriate formats. Provides guidance to less experienced colleagues; works collaboratively with other university faculty/personnel, government agencies, non-government organizations, and citizen groups to advance the mission of IICA in cooperation with The Ohio State University Works on complex projects of large scope at country and regional level in LAC and coordinates data generation and analysis for projects related to implementation of the Living Soils of the Americas (LiSAM) project of IICA. Performs additional duties to support activities and accomplish mission of the CFAES Rattan Lal Center for Carbon Management and Sequestration. This position, under the direct supervision of Dr. Rattan Lal, is a part time (30 hours per week) Term position and will continue for the length of time for which external funding has already been secured, and extension of the appointment will occur only when full funding is in hand for future salary. Minimum Education Required – Master’s Degree, PhD, or equivalent experience in soil science, biogeochemical cycling, soil quality/health, soil management. Required Experience Recognized as an expert in research both internal and external to the institution; 5-6 years relevant experience of teaching soil physics, and soil and climate change, conducting research on soil physical properties, soil organic carbon, field experiments on soil management and agronomy, and lab analyses and field measurements of soil health, modeling soil carbon, and statistical analyses of the data and good record of publication. Desired Experience Teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes, and research experience and use of laboratory/field equipment to monitor soil organic carbon and soil health; advanced understanding of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to manage a wide variety of projects.
