Assistant Building Engineer Overview
The Assistant Engineer will monitor, clean and maintain the building, common areas, recreational facilities and grounds as assigned. To direct and train those who report to them. They will perform repairs to condominium units, such as those listed below.
There will be a mandatory computer skills and maintenance competency exam that must be taken at the corporate office before the candidate is considered for a position at an Association.
The Assistant Engineer will need to:
- Understand and properly use household and industrial cleaning agents and chemicals
- Understand and know how to properly use cleaning equipment and tools
- Perform emergency maintenance repairs to units, buildings and common areas as required
- Maintain the property to the highest possible standard of cleanliness
- Perform all assigned duties in a good workmanlike manner
They will perform repairs to condominium units, such as:
- Plumbing repairs
- Electrical repairs
- Sewer and drain line repairs
- Painting - minor touch ups
- Light carpentry
The Assistant Engineer will have an understanding of:
- Closed loop and cooling tower chemicals
- Other chemicals commonly used in residential complexes
- Safe operation of cleaning equipment, power tools, and hand tools
REPORTS TO: Chief Engineer / Property Manager
EXPERIENCE NEEDED: Several years janitorial and maintenance experience in residential housing complex, office building or health care facility.
PERFORMANCE SKILLS:
1. Knowledge of household & industrial cleaning chemicals.
2. Knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment
3. Ability to move a fully loaded 1-yard trash compactor container (estimated weight 600 lbs).
4. Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding and work overhead.
5. Able to bend or kneel to work at floor level.
6. Knowledge of commercial cleaning schedules and procedures.
7. Ability to read, write, speak & understand English language.
8. Understand maintenance of building equipment & operating systems.
9. Obtain the Fire Safety Director certification from the City of Chicago.
10. Obtain any require city or state certification necessary for maintenance of the property.
BACKGROUND CHECK: Employment requires a pre-employment background check. Employment also requires a pre-employment drug screening test.
UNION AFFILIATION: Full time employees must be or become or members of Local #l after the 31st day of employment.
BENEFITS: Health care and pension benefits are funded by the employer and offered through SEIU Local 1, in accordance with the ABOMA/SEIU Local 1 contract. Employees should contact SEIU Local 1 for details on benefits and the date that benefits are available.
TRAINING: Previous experience and training is required. All Assistant Engineer candidates must already completed the training for Class C through SEIU Local 1, and then have, or enroll to get, the Building Repairer’s Journeyman’s Card (the apprenticeship program is 2 years) within 60 days of employment.
