The Peck School, a coed, K-8, independent school in Morristown, NJ, seeks a dynamic
Director of Athletics to join a growth-oriented independent school community. The ideal
candidate is not only an expert coach and teacher but also embraces a team approach
while prioritizing social-emotional development, character building, skill development, and
sportsmanship for students. The Director of Athletics reports directly to the Head of School
and is a member of the administrative team. The Director of Athletics also works
collaboratively with the Physical Education teaching staff, coaches, members of the,
teachers, and parents to support the school program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develops and clearly articulates the mission and vision of Peck Athletics through
effective communication and leadership.
  • Work with and leads the physical education teaching team to implement and foster
a robust sports program for all grades K-8.
  • Defines the tone and culture of Peck athletics, consistent with the culture of the
school, specifically consideration of others.
  • Ensures compliance with the NJSIAA rules, regulations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Prepares and implements an annual strategic plan for the Department of Athletics,
consistent with the strategic plan of the school.
  • Hires, supervises, and formally evaluates coaches and assures their commitment to

the school’s academic mission. Oversees the hiring, training, and dismissals of all
coaches.

  • In conjunction with the Head of School, staff, and coaches, develops annual goals
and objectives for the department, coaches, and staff and manages evaluation of
staff and coaches.
  • Maintains accessibility for parents of athletes, acts as liaison for parents regarding
team and coaching issues and acts as final arbitrator in all parent/coach issues.
  • Delivers athletic and recreational opportunities to students with varying interests
and skills and age levels; promotes student development, high academic
achievement, and full participation in all aspects of Peck life.
  • Develops and maintains an overall athletic budget; manages fiscal oversight of the
athletic programs and related activities; promotes athletic department financial
self-sufficiency.
  • Oversees operation and maintenance of all athletic fields and facilities in
conjunction with the Director of Operations and the Facilities Manager.
  • Oversees interscholastic schedules for all sports and coordinates transportation for
athletic events.
  • Performs other administrative duties pertaining to her/his position as may be
assigned by the Head of School.

This position requires a minimum of 7 years of athletic, teaching and coaching experience;
a master’s degree in physical education, sports management, or other related field is
preferred. The ideal candidate is an experienced coach with a proven background of
success and has strong physical education teaching skills, interpersonal communication
skills, resourceful leadership that delegates tasks effectively, with strong analytical,
administrative, and multitasking skills. Must have a proven track record with creating and
overseeing an athletic department’s strategic plan and possess the ability to cultivate and
manage relationships with physical education teaching staff, coaches, school
administrators, students, and parent community.
