The Opportunity:

Pre-K - Grade 9 Physical Education Long Term Substitute Teacher

We are seeking a Physical Education teacher to serve as a long term substitute from August 23, 2024 up to Spring Break 2025 for children in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 9. This teacher will work in partnership with two other physical education teachers on the PE Team to collaboratively design the best possible experience for a diverse range of students. At Pike, physical education is the foundation for a lifelong love of movement and builds the capacity for teamwork, sportsmanship, and a lifetime of fitness skills and engagement. Collaboration, effective communication, and flexibility are essential skills for this position, as are a sense of humor and joy for working with students in this age group and for all of the subject matter included in the PE curriculum. Applicants interested in coaching intramural and interscholastic sports for students in Grades 5-9 after school should express that interest in their application materials.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Designing, planning, and implementing PE instruction for students aged 4-14 in sizes ranging from small group to full grade level classes.
  • Supporting the social-emotional development of students, with an understanding of child development in the elementary and middle grades.
  • Assessing, documenting, and communicating effectively about student growth and development.
  • Understanding of and willingness to use multiple approaches to instruction based on student need; differentiating tasks and implementing accommodations and modifications for individual students.
  • Partnering with administrators, staff, learning services, counselors, and specialists in support of the student experience.
  • Writing report cards comments to document student progress in regards to Pike’s PE Essential Outcomes, as well as secondary school letters of recommendation as needed
  • Meeting with families on an as-needed basis throughout the school year.
  • Actively engaging in the Pike community, for example, leading clubs, facilitating affinity spaces, participating in after school faculty and community meetings, supporting Admissions events, etc.
  • As a part of the Pike program, teachers travel with their students on both day and overnight trips over the course of the year. You may be asked to attend off-campus experiences with students or advisees, if applicable.
  • Contributing to a culture of safety, consistency, and accountability.

Desired Qualities and Qualifications:

  • A passion for working with students in this age group and a record of outstanding teaching.
  • A growth mindset, the ability to apply feedback, and the ability to develop positive working relationships with all constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, and administration.
  • High emotional intelligence and sensitivity to organizational dynamics; exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with engaging students in class participation.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic independent school as a team player, eagerly assuming many roles, and devoting the time required to model excellence in job performance.
  • Commitment to professional growth, a collaborative approach for planning, instructing & supporting students, research/evidence-based practice, and Pike’s values of equity and justice.
  • Competence with technology and a demonstrated experience with integrating technology use appropriately.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required and experience working with children in this age range preferred.
