The Department of Psychiatry conducts research in various aspects of psychiatry: culture and mental health of different ethnic groups, mental health epidemiology of Native Hawaiian adolescents, substance abuse, severe mental illness, neuropsychiatry, and psychopharmacology.

 

JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Provides high-quality, coordinated, comprehensive, team-based, and patient-centered care for patients of The Queen’s Health System’s (QHS) hospitals and clinics and facilities, and other hospitals and clinics and facilities, as applicable, in the area of psychiatry and applicable specialty (e.g., Addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, child & adolescent).
  • May engage in academic medical/clinical education, training, supervision, evaluation, and research as agreed upon and/or directed by the Program Chief.
  • Works cooperatively within collaborative practice models.
  • Supports The Queen’s Medical Center’s (QMC’s) vision and values to enhance the provision of quality health care and optimize the health status of our patients, and supports QMC’s Mission to fulfill the intent of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawai`i.
 
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Performs admissions assessments including a review of the medical history, as applicable based on the assigned site.
  • Reviews and updates patient treatment plans through team rounds, consultation with treatment staff, discussion with outside treatment providers, etc. Review includes assessment of patient progress toward treatment plan goals and need for continued treatment.
  • Provides medication management for patients without a psychiatrist or when requested by other providers and as mutually agreed upon.
  • Completes all necessary documentation as required by clinic policy to meet QHS/QMC/QUMG, government and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Conducts groups if applicable to educate patients on psychiatric symptoms and diagnosis, medication, medical aspects of psychiatric conditions and/or substance abuse and coping skills as needed.
  • Consults with the patients’ outside treatment provider(s) to coordinate medication and treatment issues, directs and negotiates treatment plan changes and provides documentation of the coordination of care in the medical record.
  • Consults with family members regarding patient care issues and provide family therapy as needed.
  • Diagnoses, treats, monitors, and manages various medical conditions, disorders, diseases, and problems within area of specialty.
  • Serves as an attending involved in the assessment and treatment of patients within the assigned clinical services.
  • Works collaboratively with other physicians within the care teams and other providers at QMC to assure the larger group practice team’s effective operations.
  • Participates in quality improvement (QI) initiatives and projects as needed.
  • Participates in rotational weekend coverage of QMC psychiatry inpatient and/or ED/consultation liaison (CL) services and/or nighttime attending back-up for the general psychiatry resident on-call. Depending on interest and potential clinical need, provides coverage of other sites within the University of Hawaii – John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. Shares a reasonable amount of cross-coverage during Academic Day (when residents are in didactic seminars) and when other providers may be on leave or unavailable.
  • Mentors and provides onsite supervision of Psychiatry fellows, residents, medical students, and if applicable, other health care students and health care professionals.
  • Provides lectures, didactics, CME, and simulations to fellows, residents, medical students, and if applicable, other health care students and health care professionals, as assigned. Teaching activities may include serving as a medical student Problem Based Learning Tutor, resident/fellow seminar coordinator and/or discussant and CME lecturer for Grand rounds, etc.
  • Evaluates learners in a timely manner, providing constructive feedback that contributes to the growth of the learner.
  • Commits to developing and supporting innovative educational and clinical programs.
  • Supports research endeavors by facilitating research recruitment in a clinical setting.
  • Mentors learners on case reports, as applicable.
  • Participates in scholarly activities (i.e., research, etc.), including dissemination via abstract presentations and publications.
  • Participates in grant funded activities as appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or ECFMG certification.
  • Completion of a residency or fellowship training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaii.
  • Current board certification in Psychiatry or related specialty, by the appropriate specialty/subspecialty certification board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA or the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). If not board certified, board certification must be obtained within two (2) years of entrance into the position.
  • Two (2) years experience in treating patients who have been clinically diagnosed with mental illness.
  • Training and/or experience working in the hospital settings, including emergency room psychiatry and child/adolescent residential and acute care preferred.
  • Experience in working in healthcare teams, community, and systems of care preferred.
  • During the period of employment, shall be and remain a member of applicable QHS hospitals’ medical staffs in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction.
  • Eligible for an appointment on the faculty of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine preferred.
 
Base salary begins at $288,000/year with opportunity for productivity and quality incentives.
