The University of Virginia (UVA), one of the nation’s leading public institutions, seeks an experienced, dynamic, and mission-driven leader to be the next Associate Vice President and Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) in our central Information Technology Services (ITS) organization. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) the DCIO will provide strategic leadership and oversight to a diverse portfolio of technologies to best partner with and support the University. The DCIO will lead high-performing teams and work collaboratively across a large, complex institution. As a critical member of the ITS leadership team, they will be a champion for technology initiatives across the university and will be instrumental in supporting UVA’s strategic priorities during a time of ongoing transformation. The DCIO will be responsible for translating the CIO’s vision and strategy into technology priorities and ensuring the alignment of the rest of the CIO’s leadership team and the ITS staff on technology futures and directions. The DCIO will be responsible for managing the Finance, Administration and Learning teams as well as the Identity Services team, but they will also be responsible for leading the initial stages of ITS’ more complex technology initiatives. They will drive collaboration across ITS subteams and make certain users’ needs are understood and clearly represented in execution plans. The DCIO will continually assess the technology landscape for emerging technologies with an eye for what can be realistically accomplished within the landscape and architecture of UVA. KEY PRIORITIES Working closely with the CIO and the university community, the following will be key priorities for the next DCIO: Oversee and guide the development of an integrated technology strategy, enterprise architecture, and multi-year roadmap that aligns technology with business goals and promotes organizational agility and efficiency. Oversee targeted and/or prioritized technical project teams during implementation and stabilization of strategic new IT products and services, ensuring successful transitions and operational stability. Oversee the development and implementation of a modern identity and access management strategy. Ensure allocation of financial resources to strategic technologies and services and collaborate with ITS leaders to maximize and scale investments on emerging, steady-state, and declining technologies. Oversee ITS audit and compliance functions and associated risk management and compliance efforts. Provides guidance on the development of technology policies and standards. Provide leadership and mentorship to IT teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical professional development. Promote innovative thinking and tools to increase both ITS employee engagement and institutional partnerships. Stay abreast of relevant technology trends and technical research, especially as they pertain to higher education use, adoption, and challenges; actively engaging with Gartner, Internet2, CSG, and EDUCAUSE. Identify opportunities for technical collaboration with peer institutions. Model and encourage technical exploration and collaborations with other institutions of higher education. Serve as a thought leader and partner to the VP-CIO and the ITS leadership team. Represent the VP-CIO on internal and external committees and initiatives. Participate in formulating and communicating ITS priorities and positions on key technology issues. IDEAL EXPERIENCE The successful candidate will ideally possess the following professional qualifications, skills, experience, and personal qualities: Knowledge, understanding and experience with current and developing information technology trends and requirements for a major research university. Experience with strategic planning, developing budgets, IT project management, governance structures, and process transformation within a higher education setting. PMP certification preferred. Experience managing team(s) with ability to motivate and inspire staff. Demonstrated ability to lead in a large, complex organization where shared governance is honored and valued. Demonstrated transformative and sustained impact on an organization. Commitment to on-time, on-budget, quality execution with a clear appreciation of the importance of detail. Excellent communicator, superb listener, with ability to build relationships, community, and influence. Experience working with leaders at all levels in a university, including fiduciary boards. Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques, including experience analyzing costs, business cases, and risks associated with the selection and implementation of enterprise solutions. Demonstrated passion for the importance of details with a commitment to execution and follow-through. Significant experience with Identity Governance & Administration and authentication/authorization systems. High level of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality. Outstanding leadership ability and understanding of organizational and human dynamics. Ability to attract, recruit, develop, motivate, and retain a high-performing and diverse staff. At least 7 years of related experience, including managing large enterprise infrastructure, architecture, application, and related teams. Progressive leadership experience in enterprise-scale technology leadership is required. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
