The Agaisse Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Technician to work on projects investigating the mechanisms supporting Shigella flexneri infections. Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of molecular biology, cellular microbiology, microscopy and small animal work. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation of Shigella mutant strains, general molecular biology techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation and western-blot), image acquisition of Shigella infected cells or tissue by standard and confocal microscopy, high throughput screening geared towards chemical screening, image analysis using imaging software, small animal handling, infection and infected tissue analysis using immuno-staining and FISH-based histology MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Associate's degree Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
