Working in close collaboration with the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation, the Aquatic Assistant maintains an active aquatic wellness program for the residents.
This includes but is not limited to leading wellness / fitness activities in the pool and monitoring resident’s progress towards their goals.
The Aquatic Assistant shall also maintain a working knowledge of safe operation of all equipment in the pool.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow-up with residents, regarding their progress, and maintaining related records.
- Lead individual and small group pool classes using the Supporting Posture Longevity Agility Strength & Health (SPLASH) aquatic program and other appropriate exercise programs in the studio.
- Increase resident awareness of all healthy lifestyle factors, through organization wide special initiatives.
- Routinely provide updates to the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation regarding the status of the pool / aquatic program.
This includes but is not limited to providing information on attendance, resident feedback, and recommendations for improvement.
- Attend all applicable staff meetings, in-services, mandatory training events and other appropriate meetings as required by The Redwoods and / or the department.
- Under the supervision of the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation, schedule equipment maintenance and order supplies and parts as needed.
- Following any equipment inspections, the Aquatic Assistant shall report pertinent information to the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation.
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with outside facilitators, private companions, contracted PT / OT, and Social Workers.
- Report all unsafe / hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc., to the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation or designee.
- Support volunteers who have been assigned to assist with the wellness program. Report any / all inappropriate conduct to the Volunteer and Production Coordinator as soon as possible.
- Monitor and maintain an adequate inventory of pool supplies and equipment. Report any needs to the Director of Life Enrichment and Transportation.
- Assure that resident rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints are followed.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must be Certified Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred (Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Physical Education, Nutrition, Fitness Specialist, etc.).
- Proven ability to create and implement a program designed to achieve the client’s fitness goals using a variety of exercise modalities.
- Experience teaching fitness techniques and classes to a diverse audience.
- Prior experience working with seniors, including an understanding of appropriate methods applied to wellness activities for older adults is required.
- Have the ability to understand and speak English at a level which allows the safe, and efficient performance of the job.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Organizational and basic computer skills to plan, implement, and activities for residents.
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a team.
- Ability to use gym and workout equipment.
- Ability to swim and assist others with maintaining pool safety.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Physical effort required for daily duties include lifting, squatting, bending, reaching, twisting, stooping for long periods of time.
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and / or lift a minimum of 50 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and / or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
Must be able to walk distances equal to the length of the campus (approximately 5-10 acres).
- Must be able to feel, hear, see, smell, and speak adequately to perform essential job functions.
- Manual dexterity required to handle equipment.
- Must take and pass initial and annual test for TB.
- The ability and range of motion to perform and demonstrate all aerobic strengthening and flexibility exercises for aquatic classes.
