Department Description
The Finance Department of the University encompasses the Controller's Office and the Office of Budget, Treasury and Research Administration. These offices are dedicated to ensuring the integrity of data submitted, recorded and reported and to providing the highest level of financial services in support of the University's mission in Biomedical Research.
Detailed Description
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Accountant will be responsible for supporting the Finance Office in a broad range of activities and will work across a full range of departments including Human Resources, Food Service, Housing, Custodial, Plant Operations, Development, and the RU Press. Will be responsible for preparing monthly bank reconciliations, clearing all items promptly, and submitting them to the Assistant Controller for review. Responsibilities include obtaining all checks, photocopying all backups, obtaining appropriate Oracle coding, inputting the receipts into the Oracle Accounts Receivable system, and preparing a monthly gift log which is updated on a daily/weekly basis to summarize all deposits made. Will assist Grants and Research Administration in recording cash movements and act as a liaison with the Development Office staff in processing matching gift application forms. The Accountant will prepare monthly account analysis for various asset and liability accounts to ensure the integrity of the balances, maintain detailed schedules, and submit them to the Associate Controller for review. Will review all suspense clearing accounts, ensure all items are cleared by the appropriate individuals monthly, and prepare tax schedules for the 990 Form relating to donations received during the year and annuity gift distributions. Will assist the Accounts Receivable Manager with recording and processing monthly housing, parking, Faculty Club, retiree health billing, and related monthly reconciliations for all activities, as mentioned earlier. Will also be responsible for assisting with the review of health insurance and abandoned property issues, processing returned deposited health insurance checks, recording monthly interest and preparing summary information for the University's trusts accounts, and assisting the quarterly equipment and posting into Oracle Fixed Assets. Will participate in special projects and analysis as necessary.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and a minimum of two years of accounting or related experience required. Must have strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, and be hands-on, self-starting, disciplined, and detailed-oriented with the ability to work independently. Must have a strong understanding of proper accounting treatment for accounts receivable transactions and other activities. Experience with written and verbal internal and external customer communications, as well as experience with journal entries and general ledger reconciliation, required. Must have a high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
