Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Summer Computer Coding Instructor – Education
LOCATION/DEPT: Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center
REPORTS to (TITLE): Youth Programming and Education Manager
FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt
STATUS TYPE: Temporary Part Time

The Salvation Army Coding Instructor will evaluate different aspects of at-risk youth’s learning outcomes by progress of knowledge learned through the collection of qualitative data, interviews and survey. Influence and inspire at-risk youths to choose careers in the high-tech sector, while instilling in them the belief that regardless of growing-up in disadvantage households, success can be achieved in any given occupation through resilience, practice, and hard-work.
PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- We are looking for a high energy relatable person to provide a fun and safe learning environment for youth (9-12yrs) and teens (13-17yrs).
- Deliver high-quality age appropriate coding program for kids age 9-17, based on Scratch and Python.
- Effectively develop and implement curriculum, assessment rubric, and lesson plan. A record and summary of activities must be provided to the Education Director on a regular basis.
- Engage and encourage kids for the duration of the whole class providing them with a social, interactive class experience.
- Interact with parents or guardians as needed.
- Ensure students are keeping up with the curriculum and understanding the material.
- Maintain a safe learning environment.
- Report all problems with facilities to the Facilities Engineer and supervisor.
- Work with the Facilities Engineer to ensure an on-going preventative maintenance program for the After School Area.
- Know safety precautions needed, and ability to ensure compliance/adherence by all class members.
- In the event of an emergency, follow each step as listed in the rapid response guide.
- Ensure that all staff is trained in Safe From Harm and proper guidelines are followed.
- Assist to develop systems that safe guard any and all facilities, supplies and equipment related the after school area.
- Ensure that all staff is trained in CPR and First Aid.
- Communication
- Talk with parents if children have any discipline problems in RJKCCC.
- Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participates. This will include the writing of internal memos, schedules, flyers, newsletters and one on one discussion.
- Work in a cooperative manner with the other staff members at RJKCCC.
- Maintains good public relations for the after school area.
- Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center.
- Perform other assignments/duties as directed.
EDUCATION
- Minimum of a high school diploma. Coding and Computer Programming Degree preferred, but not necessary if years of experience match.
- Proper credentials and/or certificates and/or license if required.
- CPR/First Aid/AED Trained
EXPERIENCE
- 2 years or more of experience working with children and/or adults.
- Experience with a computer-based work environment and an excellent working knowledge of Word.
- Authorized to work in the US Job Types: Part-time
COMPENTENCIES
- Proven ability to teach students 9-17
- Knowledge of basic Scratch and Python Coding Application
- Experience with kids preferred.
- Creative and energetic person able to engage students during the whole class
- Able to report to class promptly to be prepared for instruction.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, using diplomacy and good judgment.
- An understanding of child development and building assets in youth.
- An understanding of adult teaching and learning, if applicable.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of PC based working/learning environments.
- Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
- An attention to detail.
- A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
- An ability to work with confidential material.
- A willingness to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
