Lifeguard (Full-time, hourly; AM Shift)
$18.00/hr.
The St. James Department of Safety & Rescue is accepting applications for Spring 2024 seasonal pool.
Members of the STJ Department of Safety & Rescue (DSR) are dedicated to providing a culture of safety for The St. James and its partners. Our award-winning group of professional responders strive to maximize lifeguard potential through encouragement, community, and passion for purposeful achievement.
Essential Duties:
- Interact as a member of a high-performing rescue department
- Exercise tact, fitness and good judgement in daily responsibilities
- Uphold core values of rescue readiness, ownership and integrity
- Conduct patron education and community safety presentations
- Monitor water quality and complete continuous maintenance tasks
- Provides surveillance of water based, sports, and entertainment activities
- Provides basic emergency medical care to stabilize condition of ill or injured prior to EMS arrival
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated altruism and empathy
- Skilled in swimming and water confidence
- Demonstrated experience as role model and/or team leader
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies
- Willingness to learn and develop
Physical requirements:
- Physical activities may include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
- Employee must have the physical strength, endurance, and ability to swim in deep water, sit for extended periods of time, and ability to drag one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds through open water environments
- Employee must have the visual acuity to distinguish people and objects at emergency scenes, both in and out of the water, with eyesight correctable to 20/40.
- Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods of time in emergency situations.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of eighteen (18) years at time of hire
- Completion of pre-hire fitness assessment and assigned lifeguard academy
- Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator within one (1) month of hire
- National Registry Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (preferred)
- Knowledge of safety training, procedures, and best practices used throughout sports and entertainment industry

- Packet Review
- Seasonal Lifeguard Academy
