Your Specific Responsibilities:
This individual will be responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring and selection, developing performance plans, conducting performance appraisals and routine audits, planning, and directing their work, approving leave, and taking disciplinary action as appropriate.
This is environmental managerial work serving as an assistant administrator of the statewide environmental and emergency response radiation control programs. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in assisting in the formulation of policies and procedures which have significant impact on public health. The Incumbent manages the statewide monitoring of environmental radiation around nuclear power plants and the inspections of low-level radioactive waste shipments. The Incumbent assists in the formulation and administration of a statewide budget. Duties include:
Reviews lab and field environmental radiation measurements around nuclear reactors and prepares quarterly technical reports of these measurements. Evaluates changes in environmental radioactivity levels. Performs analyses and computer programming for routine scientific calculations and for mathematical modeling of nuclear discharges and other complex phenomena.
Directs field staff to survey areas around each nuclear reactor site in Florida to locate residences, agricultural areas, gardens and milk animals. Reports results to utility staff at each nuclear reactor facility.
Develops sample collection procedures and procedures for the operation and calibration of field and lab equipment.
Directs the procurement, operation, maintenance and calibration of analytical laboratory instruments and field equipment.
Serve as an On-Call Duty Officer. Handle radiation incident calls, radiation accidents and emergencies after hours on a rotating basis per a duty officer roster.
Develops sample collection procedures and procedures for operation and calibration of field and lab equipment.
Other related duties:
Available on a 24 hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies. Perform duties as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.
Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.
The incumbent is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L- 36.003, Florida Administrative Code.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of terminology, principles and analytical techniques of radiation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience collecting various environmental samples in the environs surrounding nuclear power plants. Knowledge of federal and state regulations in the shipment of low-level radioactive waste. Knowledge of radiation principles.
