DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a highly responsible position within the Office of Communications for the Department of Elder Affairs. This position serves as the Community Relations Manager and assists in developing and maintaining an extensive public information/public relations program for the Department. This position is expected to often work independently under the Communications Director.


Serves as External Affairs Coordinator for Department leadership initiatives and partnerships. Identifies and supports opportunities to build and maintain relationships with Florida’s aging network, law makers, stakeholders, related organizations and associations, and others to assist in the promotion of agency programs, services, and initiatives. Represents the Department at community and statewide functions. Duties includes developing and maintaining positive relationships with external partners, coordinating meetings and travel arrangements, extending invitations to partners, briefing leadership before events, representing Department at public events, coordinating external events, and more.

Creates materials to support external affairs, including talking points for Department leadership, presentations, informational binders, signage, and more as needed.

Monitors media outlets for news clips relevant to Department initiatives; prepares daily news clips for internal distribution.

Assists the Communications Director in gathering appropriate information for media responses and interviews.

Supports Department campaigns through the development of press releases, proclamations, communication toolkits, op-eds, newsletters, and other tactics as needed.

Assists the Communications Director with alerting news media of upcoming Department events or appearances and pitching positive stories on Department programs.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Communications Director.

Attendance is an essential function of this position. Some travel required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Minimum of two years of working experience with media relations and/or public affairs.

Ability to utilize problem solving techniques.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to work independently and with teams.

Excellent public speaking skills

Experience with photography helpful, but not required.

Working knowledge of government.

Excellent administrative skills and have the ability to multi-task and conform to tight deadlines.

Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate technical information in common terminology.

Ability to communicate effectively through writing and speaking.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to demonstrate a professional and courteous demeanor. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public and staff. Ability to work independently and with teams at the unit and agency where appropriate.

Ability to review, analyze, and evaluate data and process travel documents.

Willing and able to make decisions and exercise sound judgment; to accept responsibility for one’s own actions and decisions; to adapt to changes in work assignments, procedures, and technology; and to be committed to improving individual performance.

REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field preferred.

Preference will be given to the Department of Elder Affairs employees.
