ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AFFAIRS (DMA)

The mission of the Florida Department of Military Affairs is to provide management oversight of the Florida National Guard and provide units and personnel ready to support national security objectives; to protect the public safety of citizens and to contribute to the national, state and community programs that add value to the United States of America and to the State of Florida.


FLORIDA YOUTH CHALLENGE ACADEMY

The Florida Youth Challenge Academy’s mission is to provide a highly disciplined and motivational environment, free from outside distractions, which fosters academics, leadership, development, personal growth, self-esteem and physical fitness for qualifying high school dropouts. The Academy consists of an operational staff and cadre with in-depth military experience, certified instructors from the Clay County School District system, a registered nurse, counselors and recruitment and placement personnel.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program.
  • The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.
  • This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.
  • As a CANDIDATE, you may be required to provide documentation (i.e. High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.
  • Must be able to pass a Department of Juvenile Justice Background screening/test.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months of employment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing; AND
  • Valid State of Florida Registered Nursing License; AND
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse; AND
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises and manages Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy Medical Operations Department. Serves as a resource person for technical knowledge in the field of primary care. Responsible for developing, scheduling and monitoring the rotation of three nurses to ensure 100% coverage of Cadets. Develops and updates standard operating procedures to provide direction and guidance to departmental staff. Monitors the quality of care and standards of practice of staff to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local guidelines. Oversees the work activities of ancillary personnel.
  • Manages care of patients with selected chronic or acute conditions. Applies nursing principles and techniques in the care and treatment of patients. Obtains specimens for laboratory examinations. Responds to special directions and instructions during emergency operations.
  • Administers emergency medical procedures as required.
  • Packages medications as ordered or as per standing orders. Gives medication as prescribed by a variety of methods. Coordinates client care with other health professionals including social workers, dieticians. Observes patients for deviations from normal conditions. Takes vital signs. Charts and records administration of medication and treatment.
  • Provides dietary guidance to Dining facility staff for special needs students.
  • Assists physicians in conducting examinations. Makes assessments of patients’ condition.
  • Screens applicant files and health records to determine eligibility of students for the Academy.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director based on evaluations of applicants. Participates in the orientation and the staff development programs for personnel assisting with patient care.
  • Plans and conducts family, patient and health education by counseling and fostering inclusion of the educational concepts into all phases of the health care provided.
  • Develops curricula, prepares educational briefings and presents classes to Cadets in accordance with Cooperative Agreement educational requirements. Provides leadership in the development and design of health educational materials and training of personnel. Prepares instructional plans and materials such as outlines, handouts, and topics for discussion. Conducts individual or group client-family teaching, class lectures and demonstrations of client care practices. Instructs medical and nursing personnel. Conducts classes and certifies staff and students in Basic Life Support/ CPR.

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques

  • Knowledge of computer software and applications to include Microsoft Office Suite and internet
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and curriculum development
  • Skills in developing medical based training classes
  • Skills in presenting training and certification course in front of large groups
  • Ability to administer prescribed medications
  • Ability to provide direct patient care and treatment
  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems
  • Ability to provide customer service and needs assessments
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to develop and present training to staff and Cadets
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to perform physical activities to include use of arms, legs, hands and feet. Lifting, bending, climbing, and handling equipment
