The Swaliga Foundation is an international youth serving organization founded in Washington, D.C. in 2012. “Swaliga” is a tribal word from the original island of St. Maarten, meaning passion. Our Mission is to cultivate learning globally and inspire young people to connect their passion to successful careers. Swaliga Foundation achieves its mission primarily through STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Education.

About the Position:

Swaliga is looking for a Teaching Artist to help deliver its #STEAMtheBlock™ program in after-school and summer camp programs. Program participants typically attend DC Public Schools and Charter Schools and participate in Summer Programs sponsored by community-based organizations and Community Recreation Centers.

Swaliga's Teaching Artist will teach basic core competency math and science principles, introduce and improve knowledge of 21st-Century technology concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and expose elementary and middle school-aged children/youth to various STEAM professions and professionals.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Program Coordinator to implement the designated curriculum in an engaging and fun manner appropriate to elementary, middle-school-aged, and high-school students.
  • Interact with students daily and monitor their engagement, progress, and understanding of the curriculum.
  • Administrative tasks including attendance tracking, capturing daily notes on students' achievements and challenges, and data collection for program evaluation.
  • Establish a strong Parent/Guardian-Teacher communication relationship to enable the discussion of participants' education and support needs, progress, and any concerns.
  • Be a liaison between Swaliga and other STEAM professionals invited to participate in the program.
  • Manage the classroom to ensure a safe and secure environment and inform the Program Coordination of any equipment challenges and supply needs, and any other problems or concerns.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Arts, or STEAM-related field is preferred
  • At least one year of experience working with youth is required
  • Ability to positively engage, motivate, and teach elementary and middle school-aged children
  • Ability to effectively communicate key basic principles of mathematics and science using various activities and methods
  • Comfortable with multiple instructional modalities to fit student's learning styles and possess effective classroom management techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Youth Development principles is preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and technology skills including but not limited to MS Office, G-Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and StudioOne

Details of the Position:

  • Seasonal position for the duration of October - August
  • Part-time position (minimum of 5 -20 hours per week)
  • Schedule varies Monday through Saturday, during the hours of 10:00am to 7:00pm.
  • This is primarily an in-person PAID position, however, there are virtual opportunities as well.

ADA Specifications:

  • Requires the ability to stand, speak, hear and use a personal computer for standard business communications, and the ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Ability to travel independently to program sites or other training sites, meetings, conferences, and other locations as requested.
