The Salvation Army Midland Division Alton shelter located in Alton, Illinois, is looking for a full-time 40 hours per week House Cook. Position Summary
This position delivers efficient, nutritious, sanitary, and safe food service in the kitchen and dining area. The work for this position must be done in compliance with City/County health codes and the standards of The Salvation Army.
Essential Duties:
- Implement standardized nutritious meal menus using purchased and donated food.
- Maintain inventory listing of stock food, perishable items, and kitchen supplies.
- Order food/supplies within approved budgets to replenish stock inventory.
- Lift and carry cooking materials and supplies.
- Regularly clean kitchen, utensils, refrigerator/walk-in refrigerator, freezers to achieve pleasant, safe, and sanitary conditions daily.
- Ability to prepare and deliver meals to clients of scattered site housing within meal scheduling of the Booth House, document meal count, and make accommodations for dietary needs.
- Ensure that delivered meals are delivered within appropriate timeframe for consumer consumption. Meals should be delivered in approved containers with appropriate utensils.
- Ability to observe any unusual or inappropriate client behavior during meal delivery and report to the Alton Booth House Supervisor.
- Follow all safety and health regulations/codes regarding food preparation and delivery
- Operate necessary kitchen equipment for food preparation & clean-up.
- Maintain confidentiality of client locations and resident status.
- Prepare and store meals appropriately for weekend delivery of meals to the housing sites.
- Attend required staff meetings.
- Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers, housing provider, and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to such as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others’ property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers and supervisors.

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and one year cooking experience. Combination of education and experience will be considered. Able to comply with recipes and safety handling instructions. Medically qualified to work in food service area. Must have and maintain a valid food handling certificate. Good communication skills as well as the ability to work with diverse and challenging personalities are essential.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
Must be capable of performing the above essential duties. Capable of frequently lifting 25 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Will occasionally move 50 or more pounds using dolly/cart/truck. Most work will be indoors in a temperature control environment; however, in the kitchen it will get above 80 degrees at times and cold in the walk-in refrigerator/freezer if so equipped.
