Join UChicago Medicine, as a Staff Nurse- Float Team in the Perioperative and Procedural Float .
A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision.
Essential Job Functions
- Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs.
- Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients.
- Provides input into the development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager.
- Uses care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care. Delegates as appropriate based on patient needs and competencies of staff.
- Competently performs patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty, as documented by the respective clinical skills inventory evaluation and completion of competency days.
- Evaluates care given and adjusts plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records.
- Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders, utilizing professional knowledge base to assure patient safety.
- Works collaboratively with other patient care and multidisciplinary team members to provide patient centered care.
- Documents or insures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies.
- Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home.
- Provides cost-effective care by appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel.
- Evaluates patient care interventions and collaborates with all team members to make changes as necessary.
- Initiates and/or participates in patient care conferences.
- Assumes the responsibility to interact on a consistent basis with the patient and family providing coordination of the plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager.
- Promotes, has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical, psychosocial and developmental needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned by Care Center Director or Patient Care Manager.
- Shares in professional leadership responsibilities related to patient care at various levels by directing and teaching other employees.
- Provides support to peers by assisting as needed, being a resource person and working as a team member.
- Participates in Care Center activities/goals to promote staff retention.
- Contributes to the Patient Services Sector by offering constructive suggestions for change and participates in planning, implementing and evaluating new and existing programs.
- Participates in a changing environment by being supportive and cooperative and assisting with activities at the unit and Care Center levels.
- Demonstrates reliability and accountability to the unit, Care Center and the Patient Services Sector.
- Actively participates in Care Center meetings.
- Assists Care Center in development/attainment of goals and objectives.
- Contributes to creating a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation and commitment for all who participate in the care of patients.
- Incorporates cost effective measures into practice to assure proper use of time, supplies and personnel.
- Uses clinical pathways and/or plans of care incorporating standards of practice.
- Participates in research activities at unit and Care Center levels.
- Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement process: assists in determining issues to be examined, participates in data collection and analysis, assists in implementing changes.
- Participates in the preceptor program either by being a preceptor or assisting those who are.
- Assesses own need for professional growth and development and seeks appropriate resources to meeting needs.
- Attends continuing education programs and participates in program evaluation.
- Promotes the professional growth and development of patient care team members by participating in the recruitment, orientation and education of new staff.
- Accepts responsibility for professional and personal actions.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining current clinical specialty knowledge base.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience
- Education:
- Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing.
- License:
- Current RN Illinois license
- BLS/ACLS/PAL certification within 6 months
