What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nursing Director, Intensive and Specialty Services position at The University of Iowa?
Accountable for leadership and management of the performance of the Intensive Specialty Services Division for patient care services in the Department of Nursing Services within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Clinical Enterprise by the initiation, promotion and maintenance of clinical, research, financial and administrative principals. The Director of Intensive Specialty Services (ISS) is accountable to enhance the organization’s capacity to perform by addressing the patient and family centered care management, strategic leadership, change management, quality management, relationship management, information knowledge management, resource management and personal/professional development objectives that follow.
- Provide supervision of daily operations of the ISS Division and specialty nursing staff providing service throughout the adult hospital.
- Assume responsibility for development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of cost accounting, rate setting, and pricing mechanisms.
- Participate in daily bed huddles to triage and assist with patient throughput, beds opening up and anticipated bed needs for the day.
- Develop and support nursing leadership to design efficient and effective systems and processes (methods) to assure patient access to nursing services, nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, nursing intervention, and patient discharge to home or to another agency or facility.
- Design and implement an organized system of nursing services across all sites and levels of patient care provided by the Clinical Nursing Division within the University of Iowa Health Care system.
- Prioritize and manage strategic goals. Achieve alignment of division and unit goals around strategic intent/aim.
- Receive and disseminate information about strategic initiatives, process improvements, best practices and innovation through a formal plan for communication, inter and intra-clinical nursing divisions, College of Nursing and UIHC.
- Develop, direct and implement a comprehensive nursing research program, promoting research activities that support program, departmental and organizational objectives.

Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Nursing or related field. If Master’s Degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required
- Current, valid license to practice nursing in Iowa
- 7 years of experience in an administrative position in a large, complex health care organization with demonstrated ability to work with multiple disciplines to ensure effective health care operations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patient, and other customers
- Demonstrated experience assuring patient safety, quality of care and compliance in a regulatory environment with various state and federal agencies and the Joint Commission
- Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment
- Demonstrated experience developing budget strategy, priorities and negotiating resource issue
- Role model Service Excellence principles
- Must be proficient in computer and software applications
Desired Qualifications:
- Current knowledge of University policies and procedures
- Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body
- Experience working in a union environment
- Knowledge of nursing research and EBP programs related to Medical Surgical Nursing care
