The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking an Environmental Nursing Assistant in the Orthopedics, Trauma, Spine Unit (3RC) to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This unit is part of the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division.

In April 2023, our acute orthopedics unit (3 RCP) expanded to become a 48-bed adult surgical unit focusing on the care of orthopedics, trauma, and spine patients. Our staff is full of motivated individuals that are passionate about the quality of care they provide.

Unit Staff Provides Care for Patients Who Experience:
- Traumas/Orthopedic Injuries (motor vehicle accidents, fractures, skeletal traction, etc.)
- Reconstructive joint surgery (hip, knee, shoulder)
- Osteosarcoma removal and reconstruction
- Spine surgery
- Hand surgery
- Foot and Ankle surgery
- Amputations
- Sports injuries
- Young adult hip preservation procedures
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships.
- Implements the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse, providing appropriate care with regard to patient’s condition and age.
- Observes patients for changes in physical condition throughout their stay, and reports to registered nurse.
- Assembles equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by nurses or physicians.
- Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as assigned (i.e. collecting specimens, preoperative preparation of skin).
- Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit.
- Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents in consultation with the registered nurse.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy.
- Assists staff during emergencies, within the scope of practice.
- Performs other projects and tasks as assigned.
- Participates in unit staff meetings and in-services.
- Complies with annual competency review guidelines.
- Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
- Assists to transport patients to tests and procedures, or discharge.
- Assumes responsibility of sending equipment to bioengineering for scheduled maintenance
- Assists in environmental of care audits
- Reordering supplies in bulk for the unit

Percent of Time: 60% 75% (24 - 30/ hours/week)
Schedule: Day shifts between 0700-1530 Monday - Friday, no weekends
