TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) invites applications for a Coordinator/Instructor/Advisor position to join their team. This dynamic position is responsible for assisting the SSS Project to meet U.S. Department of Education expectations to help students persist and retain in college, stay in good academic standing, graduate from the university and, if applicable, enter graduate/professional degree program. This role is expected to work collaboratively with the TRIO team to meet grant goals and objectives and to be able to work independently, with minimal supervision to complete the primary responsibilities of this role.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Coordinator Role: Coordinates the Peer Mentoring Program that includes the hiring, training and supervising Peer Mentors and Peer Mentoring Program.
  • Instructor Role: Has primary instructional responsibilities that include building and teaching the curriculum.
  • Advisor Role: Advises 125 participants annually providing academic coaching, guidance and support in the areas of academic planning, course selection, degree audit, career exploration, personal issues, financial aid and literacy, and other academic and non-academic student related issues.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $45,000-$53,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge or background in curriculum development and classroom instruction.
  • Ability to continually assess curriculum to improve course content.
  • Experience hiring, training and supervising employees.
  • Knowledge of academic advising and course selection, financial aid, scholarships and the FAFSA application process, and strategies for student retention and success.
  • Ability to advise/coach and mentor students and provide support for developing academic skills while also addressing non-academic issues or concerns.
  • Understanding of marginalized students and willingness to serve as an ally for a more inclusive campus environment.
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion and the skill to create an inviting and safe environment.
  • Understanding of the current issues and trends in student affairs and student development.
  • Practices for promoting student engagement and connection to the college.
  • Knowledge of a variety of software platforms (Microsoft apps), database management systems and social media communications.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in planning and implementing workshops or activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and two (2) years of experience or Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience in higher education.
  • Classroom teaching experience and curriculum development primarily for TRIO type students.
  • Ability to easily build rapport and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Comfort and experience working with diverse student populations, including but not limited to first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities.
  • Ability to effectively convey the objectives of the TRIO SSS program and to recruit eligible student participants.
  • Commitment to transparency, integrity, collaboration, communication, and ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrated passion for student success, and a commitment to the University of Montana mission and purpose, as well as to high student equity standards.
