Thomann Asphalt is a family-owned full-service asphalt paving company. Thomann’s extensive experience has kept the paving contractor in business for almost 100 years. The Company’s primary focus is on commercial and industrial paving and site work projects in both the private and public sector. We specialize in parking lot maintenance, including paving, patching, seal coating, crack sealing, drain work, and site work, which includes a full complement of grading, excavating, and utility installation services. We are currently searching for Asphalt Rakers to join the team! An Asphalt Raker is a skilled craft position that assists with the application of asphalt on parking lots and driveways using handheld tools.  Rakers must partner with other crew members to pave areas per plan specifications and if need be, to perform tasks of other positions as instructed by crew foreman to ensure daily schedules/estimates are met.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for the finished product while enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions.
• Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the specifications of the project.
• Smooths and adjusts surface irregularities, restores surface finish, spreads asphalt to proper grade and finishes before compaction.
• Use shovels and lutes to distribute asphalt mixtures over lot surfaces.
• Match and finish freshly made asphalt paving joints evenly.
• Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness to properly adhere material to lot surface.
• Work as part of the paving crew primarily raking asphalt, shoveling excess asphalt and sweeping up debris
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in an outdoor work environment, in all weather conditions. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high asphalt levels of noise and dust that is typically associated with a construction project. Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery. Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel and hot asphalt mix.

Physical Demands

o Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.  Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform essential functions.

o Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and carry at least 30 pounds personally.

o Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.

o Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday. Extended hours, nights and weekend work may be necessary based on business needs. While in season the typical work week is approximately 50-60 hours.

Travel

This position may require travel and out of town work on occasion.

Compensation

Hourly range is $21.00-31.00 (depending on experience)

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as an Asphalt Raker. A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.  Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees. One to three (1-3) years, or more, of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on paving. OSHA 10-hour certification is preferred but not required.
